Kenny, Kev, Freez and co.

Fellas - once again it has all gone dead on the western front....

What's the story with developing those 'power up kits' - any progress?

Mines going good.

There are two other big bore XT's been done right now behind the scenes.

So you ask what's Kev up to.

I am going to repack my Carbon cans this weekend, so a how to report this Saturday.

I am working on a full wiring conversion for my 07 with O2 sensor back to a 06 spec without O2 sensor, I need more control over the fuelling & the 04 to 06 ECU's allows this.

As for the other guys you will have to wait for their response. If you are after some sort of performance package kit, I think it is a long way off. There is no great demand for such a kit as yet.

The facts are since I have shown that a big bore can be done to the XT660, I only know of 1 other person that has actually done the conversion in the world & 2 more on the way.

Not surprise not too many people have done the big bore as the expense for those who have to pay labour costs would be massive.
Personally I don't like changing displacement - it's entirely personal but it feels like cheating. I am only interested in making the engine perform better within the limits of its size. Therefore am interested in high comp pistons, cams, porting or anyting else that can be done within the limits of reliability.

After all the excitement about the throttle body boring - there's still been no real feedback about the results which I for one am interested in.

I think if any of you tech guys were to make it easier for us less technically savvy people - you may find there is far greater take up than there was for say the big bore you did.

If I was Freez or Kenny I would say / do something like this:

Option A:
Send us your head and throttle body. We will port the head and bore the throttle body and it will cost you $x. You will get x or y HP and torque gains.
Option B:
The above plus we will return them to you with a high comp piston (I know there isn't one yet but we live in hope) and a performance cam shaft. These will cost you $y. You can expect to gain between x and y HP and x and y NM of torque.

If it were this simple and the results were a) presented in a way in which we could actually understand them and b) the results were guaranteed, I think you'd find some take up.

Just my 2c.

From my side, I have not run my bike on the dyno since doing the throttle body, no time at the moment just to busy to take time off work. The throttle body does make a difference, I have tried it with both the stage 1 cam & standard cam & there is definitely an improvement on both cams, the dyno will show by how much. These types of test cost a lot of money & don't come for free. Being a working person like you, it comes out of my pocket, luckily it's one of my hobbies but an expensive one at that.

I do not know of any high compression piston that will fit the standard XT bore. If you do not want to go bigger on the bore then you can re deck the cylinder hight & alter the squish in the head, or a CNC port job. All of these are available right now from the States by Kenny all research done on Raptors.

I can tell you the cheapest option is the big bore, big torque. Head jobs range USD$600 + but offer the biggest HP gains if you want to rev the XT constantly to get the hp out of it. Kenny is unable to give the HP & torque gains for the XT660 as he is unable to test the gains, as there are no XT660's in the States to test.

As for Freez, his research is mainly done on Raptors & he helps us out with his great knowledge of these motors. If someone will pay Freez to make a super HP XT I am sure he will do it with no problems, just need someone to pay for it.

What we know.
1/ Head work can be done by Kenny or Freez.
2/Valve work can be done by Freez or Kenny.
3/Valve springs can be done by Freez or Kenny
4/ Cam shafts can be bought from the States best off Ebay or kenny directly.
5/ Throttle bodies off Kenny or Freez.
6/ Big bore pistons off Ebay or kenny has some special ones.

Give these guys a PM for pricing, playing with mods like these cost alot of money & there are no guaranty's when modifying a motor.

When I did my XT motor I did not know for sure that the stage Hot 1 cam would fit, as no had done it before, likewise the 700 Raptor cylinder, no one had solid proof that it had been done. So we are the point of other XT riders taking the performance further then I have & until that happens we are all in the dark sort off. All the Raptor mods applied to my XT have show HP & torque gains so using the Raptor motor as a base for our mods does work.

So to round things off, we do not have a commercial supplier as yet for all the mods you want, one would need to get the mods from a few different places. All the research has been done by individuals who pay out of their own pocket, with time & money against them. I can only tell what we know. As time goes by we will see more conversions & have a better understanding of these motor to what they like & need to get them to go faster.

If someone wishes to sponsor my next mods, looking at 810cc any takers?

I have added all the HP & torque gains for the forum members that have not seen them before. http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=4509

Thanks Kev - that DOES clear things up.

Sorry if the tone of my email was a bit off. I know that you do this as a non-commercial thing. Therefore my comments were more directed to Kenny and Freez who I believe could sell these services if only they made it easier.

The problem I think has been that some of the result posted prior have not been on stock bikes. Therefore you may say that the throttle body improves things but that is on a bike with significant modifications (big bore).
Perhaps I am asking too much and want things over simplified.

Anyway - thanks for taking the time to reply.

Cheers.

As I said these mods will come in time. I would love if we had other XT riders doing all sort of engine mods this would speed things up.

As for the throttle body I agree with you, my bike is far from standard & would show different results to a bog standard XT.

We will have to wait for Davids results as he is fitting a +3mm throttle body to standard XT660 bore with filters & cans.

I shall be fitting the +3mm body to my bike here in Spain but have been involved in all sorts of domestic problems since I got here in mid October (electricity company putting obstacles in the way of fitting a new {working} meter to my supply, water company refusing to install a new water meter anywhere other than on the main road 1+half kilometers away with no security on it!, the Ayuntamiento prevaricating over reinstating their track down to the valley where I live etc.).

Even when it is fitted it may be a long time before I can do other than give riding impressions of its effect because my nearest dyno is (I think) in Granada. I have bought a rev counter to fit so that I may be able to adjust the mid range by hand but because most of my riding is on campo roads or dry river beds and goat tracks which do not have any level stretches I am constantly on and off the gas and am tuning my bike for maximum torque and not outright power.

As Kev has said we are doing these modifications on the basis of best guess and risking our own money for unknown results. Shall do my best to give an idea if the 2-300 is worth it. I believe it will be for my use of the bike on the basis of more air and more fuel into the bike with adequate outflow from it (with or without baffles?) in what is an understressed big single should be beneficial.

I should like to try the bigger bore but as I have no garage facilities (work in the open air) and no proper engineering equipment (hand tools with bench pedestals and several portable hand vices for the electric drills) it is only a bit of ingenuity and lateral thinking that allows me to take apart my bike for modification and if I get stuck I'm like the Christmas Turkey (stuffed). Until I can find a working window to fit the bits I have to be patient.
