Corrision to engine casings

Hi Everyone,
I have approached Yamaha UK (Customer Services) to complain about corrision to outter and inner engine casings on my FEB 07 XTR (9k miles - used daily). This is really quiet extensive, and not just where you might expect it (underneath and hidden away spots) but on upper casings as well. They have advised me to visit the Dealer I bought it from new, who have taken pictures and are sending these back to Yamaha Customer Services. As yet I don't know what the outcome will be - the bike is still under warrenty - so I might get new engine casings. Has anywone else suffered from corrision like this? Could it have been a "batch" production problem, in which case there are likely to be a few more bikes out-there that might be affected.

Regards,
Tomo7

Took mine to a local yamaha dealer and he told me that they would NOT replace them as it was wear and tear mine had only done 7,000 miles ,even though Yamaha uk had said ok the dealer would have been out of pocket on the labour

That does sound like a crap deal. Did you get back in touch with Yamaha and tell them what the dealer had decided? I would have thought it was not in Yamaha's interest to get bad PR by treating you this way. Failing that, you could take a case with the Small Claims Court: Goods should be fit for purpose.

FS365 or WD40 or simular. Tends to be a Yam trait if you dont keep on top of it

Bike was washed thouroughly after every ride and coated in oily rag and wd40 but you cant top it as the corrosion starts beneath the paint and Yamaha know this yet they will only replace outer most cases

Sorry to hear you damaged the bike - while in the process of claiming about the corrision. I also kept my bike clean etc. Yamaha are not some tiny operation - they produce marine machines as well and I am sure they are on top of chemically treating their engine metal - so I don't buy the "resignation that this problem is beyond sorting" that might be being perpetuated by dealers (to put anyone off complaining about the problem). I had a look around the other bikes at my dealers and none of them showed the extent of corrision that mine has! This is probably something to do with the manufacturing batch - your bike might have been one of the same batch!

Sorry but cant see it as a batch as my friend(worked in a local dealer) told me that they had done a few engine cases since 04(dealer wont mention that) and mine is an 06 so think there is something wrong but as you said dealers will try eveything to put people off

Yep jas your very true. Ive an 06 and its got some bad corrosion of the engine casings but i was too late on the warrenty (dealer told me wrong date than was in book, arrgghh) so never got mine changed. But even so i wouldnt think they would have changed them as the salesman tried to say that the XT660 just a big single so will feel very surgy. Load of balls as i read all the info i needed on this forum.

engine casings

Hello everybody, looks like i'm joining the queue with the dodgy paint job on the engine.
I've got an 08 XTR and just after washing it yesterday some of the paint has started to come off, looks like the ally underneath the paint has started to corrode and is attacking the paint!.
I've only done 4000 miles, and once she has been out in the wet. It's never been off road.
I'm going to leave it another month and then it's time to take it back.
Both engine casings and covers have started to bubble.
I thought i'd try something different from a Honda, looks like it's going to be an expensive lesson.I had the same CBR for 7 years and not even a bit of corrosion on it.
This is going to be my first and LAST Yamaha.Never again.
