More road than off road
At the moment i havent got a yamaha XT660R but i am planning to get one in easter of next year. Any way my ride will include mostly boring straight roads and will need a more road tyre on the rear to take all this up right riding.
So any tyres you guys say better than others? Also what are the standard tyres like on the bike? heard a few posts that they are crap and very bad in the wet!!!

Avon Gripsters
With it's distinctive, computer-optimised, arrow-headed tread pattern, the robust Gripster has been carefully designed for mid-rage trail bikes that are used both on paved roads and down dirt tracks. Grippy and long-lasting. http://www.avon-tyres.co.uk/motorcyc...f/gripster.pdf If you can take the rough with the smooth, chances are that you're riding a trail or dual sport bike. Of course, you probably don't get to use it off-road much - and some of you may never venture into the dirt - which is why Avon has biased it's dual sport tyres more towards on-road ability. |

cheers for the reply capt but any just pure road tyres, as i am thinking of getting the bike around easter so will use the dual purpose tyres on it and hoepfully try some trails and stuff to get used to the bike off road, then when winter comes will change when the tyres are done to full on road tyres.
Any manufactorers better than others? for just pure road riding for the XT660R?

Hello max ,mine came with the standard bridgestone and during my first rideout and after and hour and a good few miles on the twisties we stopped for a few piccies and a smoke and someone noticed that the pegs had been rubbing on the ground .
I think its all down to confidence on your own part with the tyres you have this is a picture of me on my R with standard tyres as you can see its dry but ,this was a rideout for a mate to try out his new camera so with no protection we were taking it easy ,and not really pushing hard |

Pegs down more like side stand down first from that picture.
for the photo. I'm not too sure now on just road tyres thinking about doing off roading sometime over the winter but dont know wheather to buy a set of off road tyres and just keep changing the tyres over, or just stick with the Metz tourances that are on it!!! I'm planning on doing some off roading in wales hopefully this summer so will need off road knobblies then.
Again great picture and thats you taking it easy!!!

No bother will do. Havent a clue at when i'm looking to get over, could be either Easter some time or summer. Me dads looking at buying an old wreck of a bike just for some crack and to get back into riding off road again. Just wondering by any chance you dont know of any off roading riding places near you the ones where you just pay for the hire of a bike, kit etc and they take you on a guided tour around somewhere. Thats what me dads looking to do for one day then try some green laning by him self or with out an instructor.
Just looking at a place not too far away from me to try some green laning/off roading. Its called the lead mines and is used for trails bike rally days and other stuff, but last i heard was they where not allowing anyone on it unless it was a big event. Went down on saturday poking about and got talking to some guy about it, he said as long as you dont go out of the mines and into other property your ok. O and if your not riding a big single with a scaffold tube for some exhaust pipes (dam). So when i come visit i shouldnt be crap just slow.

I was just thinkin about it, does taking your normal road tyres off and replacing them with off road tyres like the TKC80 or the pirelli mt21 etc not unbalance the wheel?? Just as explained before i was planning on just taking the Metz tourances i have now off placing some off road tyre on, do a long days off roading then replace the road Metz back on again hopefully in the same position so as not to disrupt the balance of the tyre.

A friend of mine took his wife and son on one of those offroad days not to far from me using ttr 250s and i think it cost around 150 all in ,i will find out more when the time comes if your interested,as for tyre balance i dont really notice ,but i have only changed them over once for the offroad bit ,and as we have planned a road trip of around 5-600 miles at the end of the month i have changed them back to the trailwings,i will let you know how things go when we get back.
are you anywere near portrush as i have just got in contact with an old army mate after 15 years ,and maybe planning a trip over one weekend in the summer but nothing planned as yet |
