How do you mean "sideways"?

Richard you can only tell if your rear wheel bearing are worn if, once the wheel and the spindle are fitted in place and tightly bolted to the correct torque, you are still able to get a play from side to side on your tightened wheel. If you get lateral movement the bearings are worn.

If you face the wheel and you can pull and push the sprocket and carrier towards and away from you then there is a problem, it is unlikely to be the wheel bearings though, that would show up as movement in the wheel, ie , grab the tyre and the wheel would rock about the spindle. What you are describing does not sound like that, how much does it move?

There is a single ball bearing race in the sprocket hub, this bearing can have a small amount of side ways play this is normal as it is not a roller bearing type, but should not have any play in the direction of the chain is pulled.

If the side ways movement is excessive you would need to replace the hub bearing. Also check the rear wheel bearings as well for movement before removing the rear wheel. There are 3 bearings in the back wheel, 1 sprocket & 2 wheel bearings.

Order a new bearing before removing the wheel.

Remove rear wheel, remove sprocket hub by lifting it off the wheel, knock out the old bearing & knock in new bearing.

Bearing & part number. I would also change the seal no 8.
