First flat on the XT

Always worried me having tubes and never liked it as I know when they go they go down fast. Well yesterday it happened. Luckily I was in moving convoy of cars doing 40 then all of a sudden bars go from lock to lock. Managed to pull over. Front tyre deflated completely in seconds. Not nice. Had new tyres and tubes a month ago.

Seems something went through the tyre punctured the tube then fell back out. The bike was so hard to control going slow and in a straight line that had I been cranked over or at motorway speeds it I would have been off.

Messed with my head now. Have had new tube put in but makes me miss tube less tyres. Anyone else had same experience?

Wasn't nice.

A flat isn't nice regardless if you have tubes or tubeless. Maybe the good thing about the tubeless is that you can quickly fix it to get somewhere to repair it (which is also easier than tube).

Last tire change I bought the heavyduty tubes, 2 sets, and I havent had any problems so far (8+ months). Really depends on your luck tho, you might miss a screw today but It can wait for you tomorrow.

On my ride through Africa had heavy duty tubes, only 3 punctures but the fastest one to go down was 20 minutes. Know this as blew it up and rode on for that long before having it affect handling ( wanted to ride out of soft sand to a somewhere a bit firmer so inflated it 3 times). Other puncture was slow, blew it up in morning and down to half pressure 4 hours later. 3rd one was losing pressure over night about 1 bar so very slow.
Well worth the investment for the much more expensive tubes, seem to seal hole and not rip.

Thanks for the replies.

Had the tube replaced and it turned out to be a compression puncture. Two big holes in either side of the tube. So big in fact that even with a compressor the tube would hold no air.

Funny thing is I check pressures so religiously and I checked it before I went out that day. I didn't hit a bump or pot hole. Tube was only 100 miles old. Heavy duty one too. When it went while I was riding it went flat so fast. Scary.

Maybe the tube was pinched when it was last changed. Who knows.

Had big punctures on tubeless tyres before and they have never gone down this fast. Wish there was a tubeless option for the XT.
