New Bike, New Purchases? Haynes for 2008?

Hello all,
I'm new to the forum and have joined as I have just become the owner of 2008 Tenere. Not sure if buying an early model was a good idea, but it's done now. Hopefully the wheels won't fall off too soon

I notice the Haynes manual for Tenere's lists as 2009 onwards. What are the differences and can I rely on the Haynes for my bike?

Cheers,

Hi,

Welcome to the forum, im also pretty new here too and have a 2008 Xt660x, so im not so clued up about the Tenere.

One thing I would say is getting the DNA stage 1 and 2 filters plus fuel mods made a big difference to my bike, added more power and a better sound even with the stock pipes, in case you are considering it.

Regarding a manual, I joined the forum supporters recently which gave me access to the service manual downloads etc (Usually only available to Yamaha staff as far as im aware), so maybe worth doing this instead of getting a Haynes manual? Its only 10.

Theres not much difference between an 08 and a 09: as far as I know the '08 has a different breather, which doesn't work that well as the ones on the '09 and on. I got my breather replaced under warranty and it does perform well now. I got the Official Workshop Manual for the XT660Z Tenere from my headmechanic at my Yamaha Dealer and gave it to this Forum and now is available for downloading(if you're a sponsor!). Have fun with your Tenere, I do with my '08 with 110.000km's+ on it, without ANY problems!

I had the same feeling in May 2008.... she's still with me and still going strong.

There are a couple of points though;

1) the harness may chaff just under the tank, loosen the cable tie is all it take to prevent this.
2) Headstock bearing are dry from the factory,
3) Regulator connector is problematic if not fastened together correctly.

There's a good chance these have already been dealt with though, so you should be good.

Thanks!

Thanks for the word of support, welcome and advice. Nice to know there's no significant changes between 2008 and 2009. Incidentally, I contacted Haynes with my query and, much to my surprise and their credit, they got back to be with a detailed reply. In essence, the manual should read 2008 and there's no real difference according to the chief motorbike technician.

I get my hands on the bike proper in a few days so will take stock of everything in the cold light of day then. One the plus side the milage is quite low (18,000 ish) but worryingly service records are 'sparse'. Time to learn to service a Tenere!

Well, here's to a future of posting dumb questions on theforum!

Cheers,
