help wanted...fuel pump relay...wits end!
Hi all,really need some help and advice.
To cut a long story short my XTR conked on the motorway and the Aa diagnosed fuel pump/multi relay.After sourcing a second hand one on eBay it still wouldn't start so I thought I'd have a look myself (to be honest I'm not the best mechanic but I have an understanding).Much to my surprise I found the fuel pump fuse had blown! I changed this and the bike started perfectly.I left it a few days and guess what...dead again but this time all fuses intact.Can I have blown another relay? The only thing I did different was use the red key for the first time.Can this be relevant? I'm at my wits end and any advice would be most appreciated |

If the fuse blew then the likelihood is there is either an internal fault in the fuel pump or there is a wire shorting to ground somewhere in the fuel pump loom. If it's conked out again and the fuse hasn't blown I would hazard a guess that whatever was originally intermittently causing the fuse to blow has failed completely not allowing any current to flow.
Nine times out of ten the sort of problem you are describing is the fuel pump motor which has worn out. It is very unlikely that another relay has failed, and I suspect that the relay wasn't your original problem and it was coincidence that it worked after you fitted the replacement. However, I would start with the simple stuff first and go through the wiring with a fine toothed comb. You can also test the fuel pump operation in the dash's diagnostic mode. I take it you cannot hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the ignition on? Or does it prime, but sound laboured? The other thing you can do if you can't hear the pump operating is to see if it is getting power by pulling the connector and seeing if there is voltage present with a multimeter connected across the two terminals on the loom side of the connector. If it is the pump, don't whatever you do look at the price of the genuine part - you'll have a heart attack! The unit can be disassembled and the just the actual pump replaced which isn't available as a Yamaha part. They can be had off ebay for �20-�30 or so. |

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply! I had it apart again today,lifted the tank to see if I could hear it prime (I'm a little hard of hearing) as I turned it over it started! Put the tank back and it stops.I then played with the white connector into the pump and it fired albeit intermittently.Thanks to your advice I now know the fault is in the pump but does it sound like the motor or a bad connection? Many thanks in advance

Yep, definitely sounds like an iffy pump or bad wiring. You need to try an eliminate one or the other from your enquiries. Try what I said about seeing if there is a consistent and uninterrupted 12V supply to the pump's connector with a multimeter. Give the wiring a thorough visual check and make sure all terminals in the connectors are clean and corrosion free.

hard to do... there no constant power surply to the pump
till the motor is running... but you can test the wires "green plug to the pump" for a few seconds while the pump is priming after yer turn the key on.. a pump unit is $830NZ from yamaha or just the pump off E-bay for $30US... ...

That's what I alluding to - you get five seconds of constant voltage at the terminals after they key is turned on.

Fuel pump update
UPDATE! Bought a second hand fuel pump and now all is rosy! Thanks for all the advice
