Red key???
Hi Everyone.
My name is Fabian from East London South Africa. I am interested in buying a 2004 XT660R in Imaculate condition. The only thing is the guy lost the red key and he only has one key available. The mileage on the bike is 13000km. The price is about R38000 which is less than half the price of a new one. There is someone who can clone these keys here by us. Is the red key needed for anything else than cutting keys? Do you think the Bike is worth buying? R38000 is about 2400 USD. It also has Cowley after market exhaust fitted to it. Looking forward to hearing from you. |

Hi mate,
I would not be able to advise you on the price as I am not aware of the SA market, but the absence of the red key is a problem. You cannot do anything (apart of riding) w/o that key. It is uses for other keys' ECU programming. If something happens you will have to buy new wiring loom along with new ECU, barrel lock etc. which could be pricey. But if the price of the bike is significantly lower than the market average, probably it is worth the try... After all your decision

I didn't get a red key with my Ten either. Will worry about that when it is a problem.

It is a pitty as the bike bas hardly been used.... Yamaha agents have told me that it would be R20000 plus to change ecu and wiring with the barrel.... almost makes it more worth while to buy a new one...

i would not buy the bike without the red key an less it was very very cheap. that way if you get a problem with the bike and need the red key. just strip the bike for parts and get your money back that way then you lose nothing. the chances are ,you will not have a problem .but if you do have a problem as long as the bike was cheap to start with you will not loss out. but if you are buying a bike you want to keep for a long time and add lots of nice bits to it, i would not buy one without the red key. Saying that how many people out there that have the red key know its the real one? if the red key is lost all people do is buy a plain red key (ebay) get the key cut and then tell the buyer the bike comes with the red key. how many people check the red key works when they buy a bike?. Bike is worth a lot less with out the red key.
