Fuel reserve revelation
Sorry if it's been mentioned before, but I had an 'aha' moment re the very large reserve we are 'blessed' with.
I've been having fuel pump failures with my WR250R at work, which has led to me being very careful to keep the 14L tank I have fitted as full as possible due to heat buildup. I think Yamaha have attempted to guard the Tenere pump by making as sure as they can be that we refuel before the pump is exposed to risk. Not a problem in cool places, but a real issue when in city traffic situations and slow running in hot countries. Well, that's what I reckon, anyway... |

I have had to replace my pump...
never thought of low fuel level as a possable issue.... But the tank "22.5L Gillimoto" was down to it's last few liters when it died... Prob less than 20mm of fuel around the pump.. Bikes a 09 XTR with 40,000k on it.. Pump only is worth about $30NZ off E-Bay ========> http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Intank-F...item3398be74c2 or $800NZ plus for a complete unit from Yamaha.. Is the only way Yamaha sell it....

Low fuel levels and hot temperatures are a well-documented reason for fuel pump failures. My car manual states that the fuel level should not routinely drop below 1/4.
In 15,000km/750 engine hours I'm on my third pump in my WR, but it is used well outside its design envelope so it's just another operating cost. Keeping the tank full helps, but I'm going to try insulating the whole underside to see if that helps. The Tenere, I suggest, in the unlikely event of it being used under the same conditions, would probably crap out pumps just as often. Fact is, a big tank, relatively plenty of fuel, and higher average speeds or shorter runs make life relatively easy on pumps. I think my WR pumps would last for ages if I rode it around at normal speeds most of the time. This doesn't happen, thus the failures. |
