46 rear question

Ive a normal 15/45 set up with a 110 chain. Can I fit a 46 rear on that setup or if I need to wait for the chain to wear if so how much am I looking for?

one tooth shouldn't be a issue with your chain..
one extra tooth on the rear is the same as 1/3 of a tooth
on the front... you will be lucky if yer notice the diffrents...

Cheers. I'm doing some experimenting with it to see what works best for me and my local conditions.

I used a 16tooth on my old xtr and with a stg2 filter, kev fuel mod and exhausts the acceleration was still great.

I now use the similar setup on my tenere

I run either 14/48 or 15/48 on my XTR..

Standard 15/45 is 4000rpm at 100kph 3.0:1
15/48 = 250 revs more at 100kph "4250 rpm" 3.2:1
14/48 = 500 revs more at 100kph "4500 rpm" 3.4:1

I have a 16 tooth I haven't used.. to put it back to standard ratio..
16/48 = 3.0:1 same as 15/45

14/48 is a good ratio for offroad... able to go very slow though river crossing
& gnarly single track etc.. Ok on the road..

15/48 is good if theres alot of seal to cover to/from the offroad rideing..

my feeling is the XT's are over geared for anything but road use..

Another couple of bonus is it puts the motor just above the 4000rpm
bad vibration zone & those extra revs help with the snatchy fueling issue
at low speed in traffic..

i did run the 14/45 for a few weeks and just found it too snatchy but that was before a PC5 and stage 1 filter. but was fantastic going slow.

I need to keep sensible road abilities so can't go to low.

but i have noticed the gap between the lower gears is to big say between 1st and 2nd.

I run twin Akra's 1 and 2 filters snorkel out holes in the airbox with a PC on stock gearing the only time I use first gear is when I drop into it by mistake even from the lights it pulls second with the absolute minimum of clutch use.

I did try a 14 engine sprocket but didn't like that at all.
