GPS Tracker - Set-up
I recently bought one of these from eBay:
This one to be precise! - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/360543779238 I have a secret location for it although it's not finalised - for testing I had it hooked up to spare car battery in my VW camper. Hopefully my location (on an XT660Z Tenere) will be suitably covert, dry and vibration free. It's a Chinese clone of a GT02 - describes itself as an "Accurate H02". After much poking about on the internet and trial and error I now have it working as I want. I used a PAYG SIM from GiffGaff: https://www.giffgaff.com/ - �5 per month gives 300 texts and 20MB data a day, with reasonable EU roaming (rubbish elsewhere). To actually set it up took a bit of effort but here are my successful steps: *ZC#000000#07123456789#07987654321# It responds to commands by text and replies correctly - these are the commands I've used:
To have web based tracking and other useful things - like "Geofence" warnings when it moves out of a specified zone, like your garage! I used Orange Trace GPS - which can be found at both these addresses - I used the svcs address to set up the account (you need to switch language to English, unless you speak Russian of course!). https://svcs.gps-trace.com/ http://orange.gps-trace.com/ You need to enter the units mobile number, its full IMEI and I used the following IP address in the unit: 193.193.165.166 and Port: 20490 I told the website to think the unit was a GoSafe 911 The web side of things was fairly straightforward once I got the APN details into the unit so the data connection worked. The other consideration is data usage. I have it set to report its location evry 15 seconds whilst moving and 80 seconds stationary. I think each report is 300 bytes. So based on 10 hours moving and 14 hours stationary (very generous on movement) works out at less than 1MB per day. Battery drain is another consideration - it claims 0.2mA on standby and consumption of 0.3w/h. That doesn't seem much but like most things I guess it adds up over time if the bike isn't used (I tend to hook up an Optimate from time to time). Either way it works and for �17 was bloody cheap and a monthly cost of �5 to �6 is worth it for the fun tracking! Peace of mind is pretty good too.

I should also add the instructions that came with it are very difficult to read - both by being very small and a poor translation.
The GPS588.com tracking website it's set up to work with I didn't get to work - not any fault of the website I changed the IP address before I got the APN working properly and I couldn't work out how to reset it. I haven't changed the password because I'm the only one that knows the phone number of the unit's sim! Also, it is bound to my mobile phone and shouldn't respond to anyone else's. I'd rather not risk mucking it up either. The, free, Orange Trace website gves a lot of detail and functionality - I suspect they make their money through fleet management rather than the odd motorcyclist or lost RC plane. It's also pretty bloody accurate.

Can you expand upon the entries you've mentioned, were they into Orange or to the unit? I am up on Orange GPS and can't seem to make it see the GPS device and can't find somewhere in orange GPS to enter the LAC code for its location when GPS fails and GSM is fine _ really confused graham |

A bit slow...
hi All,
i'm clearly a bit slow - how the heck do I get the tracking page in English? The main page is English, but as soon as I click 'Go To Tracking' t reverts to Russian... CheerS Grant

Depends which link you are using:
http://orange.gps-trace.com/ On the above there's a language drop down on the menus above the main map. The other link below (which is the one I think you're using): https://svcs.gps-trace.com there is your username in the top right hand corner (I've blanked it out in my example) click on your username to get the dropdown settings box

When it can't find the satellites - like when it's stored buried at the back of my workshop - I think it tries to fix its position by the phone signal.
This results in it wandering about and reporting itself as moving. Which caused me a bit of a panic the first time I got an email saying it had left the geofence I had set up! The tracks it has built whilst out on a run have been surprisingly accurate - to the extent of pinpointing its position in a layby when I stopped for a break or which side of the motorway I was travelling. It even has my ever decreasing circles trying to find the campsite in Augustusburg earlier in January.
