Grippy road-only tyres for XTR?
I bought my XTR thinking I might take the occasional dirt track but in reality I don't see it happening now. Short of trading for a Duke 690, I've got to figure out my options to make the XTR all it can be as a road bike without spending a fortune. First stop: tyres.
Is there anything really grippy available for the 21" rim? I know people rave about Distanzias and EXPs, but I'm looking to go one step further and go for something with no off-road bias at all. Does such a thing exist? Contintenal Trail Attack is the only thing that looks like it might be what I am after. Edit: Just thought of an extra question. My bike is a 2009 model, registered in 2011. However, I'm assuming that means the tyres, original Tourances, have been on the bike for 4 years. Despite having only 3500 miles on them, would I be correct in guessing that almost any new tyre would be a significant improvement over a 4 year old "mark 1" Tourance? Pirelli Scorpion Trail.
despite the name they are pretty much 100% road-oriented. I have been using them ever since I got a second set of wheels which are equipped with true knobbies for off-road use. |

I've used
Dunlop Trailmax TR91. Again, a miss-leading name, they are road biased and very impressive they are too.
Battlewings are pretty good as well. |

Thanks.
Any comments on whether all the new tyres will show up the old rubber on the bike, or is an ageing set of original Tourances still fairly comparable? |

Quote:
Any set of new tyres will feel a bit odd, or different from what was fitted before. What I would say is that, if you intend spooning on the new road-bias rubber yourself, it's worth noting they will be a lot harder to get on than a dual-sport or off road tyre as they have a much stiffer carcass. |

Thanks very much. I've ordered up a set of Scorpion Trails at 198 fitted. They should be done for the weekend.
By way of price comparison, the Battlewings came in at 207. I had no real way of comparing the performance of the two, but the Revzilla Youtube channel reckoned the Pirellis were more road-biased than the Bridgestones, so with them being cheaper too, that's what I went for. |

Nice one. Don't forget to report back with you've done a few miles with them.
