Hi from potential XTZ660 owner with mpg question

Hi XT people,
I've been offered a great deal on a new XTZ660 so could be soon an owner. I've one query - been researching fuel consumption and get the impression it can vary wildly from low 40's (mpg) when being caned to around 70 mpg when taking it easy. Any further views on this or have I got it about right?
I once had an XT600E which I enjoyed a lot but not as much as my current Africa Twin (which I'll be keeping)!

I usually get mid 60's from mine on road riding with a reasonable turn of speed.

The only reports I have read of ~40 mpg have been magazine road tests, where they appear to thrash the living day lights out of them. My current XTR returns high 60s or low 70s, ridden, er, briskly. My previous 04 had a best figure of a smidge over 80 on a gentle run. I reckon you would have to ride with the throttle to the stop permanently to get anything like 40 mpg.

Ive never had better than 47 mpg on my ten yet. And i ride fairly brisk. Comin to think of it i never had much better out of my xt660r. My point is what is one persons "brisk" hey. The only bike i came close to that was my dr350. They are still awesome bikes..... Get one

Good point. I think of my riding as 'not hanging about', but it may well be more economical overall than someone else's style. My riding at the moment is 99% road, mostly commuting on A roads and day rides, and I pretty much use WOT until I get to 60/65 then stay there no matter what. I don't do long stretches on motorways at 85, which I suspect may be the killer for economy. But in traffic I am ahead of most things. Different bikes and different engine types will all have different characteristics, and I guess there are no hard and fast rules.

TL;DR: no one rides a motorcycle for economy these days. Fill it up and use it like it's meant to be used. If you want economy, get a diesel Corsa.

Hi Mark and welcome aboard.

Appreciate one man's fast is another one's slow, but I never can quite get my head around reports of <50mpg? If I cane the living daylights out of mine and try and ride irresponsibly and uneconomically, it still belligerently returns consumption in the low 50s!

I cannot get my XT660X below about 55mpg even trying hard so dont worry, I am sure that you can get way over that when you take it easy....

(Now sold on, sob) 2011 Blue XT660X with gold wheels, was 26,500 km.
Engine mods: K&N Stage 1 filter, DNA Stage 2 filter, snorkel removed, Kev fuel mod fitted.
Plus: smoked Puig screen, Yam aluminium sump guard, Yamaha / Acerbis handguards, Givi Trekker aluminium side cases, Leo Vince X3 cans plus Kev front fork mod and Fender Xtender. Just fitted Michelin Road Pilot 3 tyres.

SOLD the XTX for a Super Ten 1200. And just bought a Raptor 700 so staying on here for some tips....

Had a three figure spin today on a private road following a bunch of BMW k's and rt's.

Mpg was 61.8.

Pleased with that.
