http://ajsutton.co.uk for genuine Yam.
If you need a complete set of bearings, seals, and the sleeves the bearings run on (which will prob be knackered if the bearings are) then you are looking at about 230 in parts. There's actually four sets of bearings if you count the ones in the swingarm at the other end of the dogbones. Seven bearings, eight seals, four sleeves... adds up pretty quick. You could almost certainly find the bearings and seals elsewhere, whether the potential saving justifies hours of searching to find them is up to you. The sleeves you will need to go to Yam anyway.

Thanks uberthumper
Haven't stripped it down yet but am pretty sure Something's not right When bike is on centre stand you can lift swing arm And feel movement before the shock kicks in, so feels Like a bit of slop in lower most part of cantilever thing, Not sure if this is normal? Sure don't feel normal, What's your take on it mate.? Thanks |

There will always be a bit of play, probably working out to a few mm at the end of the swingarm. Any significant movement in any particular bearing and that one is probably knackered. It will be obvious when you pull it apart - as I said above, you'll see the damage on the sleeve.
Chances are it will only be one position, so not as expensive as the whole lot. Worth stripping, cleaning and greasing the whole lot. I'm doing all mine at the moment in prep for going to the US. If I wasn't, I generally wait till it fails the MOT ;-)

A guide to how screwed your bearings/sleeves are, from 'fine' at left through to 'knackered' at right.
![]() The left hand one I actually changed about ten thousand miles back. If I wasn't shipping the bike several thousand miles to a country it's not sold in I'd not be changing it. The right hand one is actually from the swingarm pivot. While I've regreased the linkage bearings a couple of times, the swingarm hasn't been out since it left the Yamaha factory. You can actually feel recesses in the sleeve where the rollers have sat.

I use Lithium Moly grease (the black stuff). It's meant for stuff like CV joints in cars, which is a reasonably similar application. Seems to work.
Don't know what Yamaha actually recommend.

No, I'll be guiding myself, and spending nearly three times as long out there.
Nothing about the way Nick Sanders travels appeals to me. RTWPaul on here has first-hand experience of one of his trips, and his conclusion was something to the effect of "never again".
