There will always be a bit of play, probably working out to a few mm at the end of the swingarm. Any significant movement in any particular bearing and that one is probably knackered. It will be obvious when you pull it apart - as I said above, you'll see the damage on the sleeve.
Chances are it will only be one position, so not as expensive as the whole lot.
Worth stripping, cleaning and greasing the whole lot.
I'm doing all mine at the moment in prep for going to the US. If I wasn't, I generally wait till it fails the MOT ;-)
