Riding in rain and engine light came on
Only had the xt660 tenere about a month, its a 08 model with 2000 miles on it.
The previous owner had it from new and never used it in the rain. Riding home got caught in the rain, After about 15 mins the engine management light came on. I was lucky by then to be near enough home. The clocks went off and I pulled up and there was a burning smell, the engine management light starting flashing. Is this the dreaded rectifier problem? Is it a easy fix? Or will the rectifier need replacing with I presume some of the loom? |

Sounds very much like it is the reg/rect? What flashing code is the light showing - number of long and short flashes with ignition on engine not running?

Yep sounds very like rectifier, stick the battery on a trickle charge if you can- over night, is usually good, then start up, check the battery voltage while running it should be above 13v. if not, it's likely the troublesome connector has failed.
or disconnect the regulator connector and look to see if the black wire terminal has overheated and melted the surrounding plastic, not good! though typical for that year of bike! ![]() checkout, http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=17054 I've 46,000 on the clock most of it with this mod done, it's a simple do it and forget, really a pity yamaha did not get this right in the first place any probs give me a shout bernard |

Thanks for the info.
I had a look today and sure enough it was the rectifier plug melted by the black Earth lead. The engine management light was flashing 4 long and 6 short. I removed the wires from the plug and put them straight on to the rectifier. Started the bike and the engine management light stop flashing. I presume it was just the plug melting and the black wire losing contact that caused the problem. I am hoping the rectifier will be ok and I can hard wire it up and seal the wires. If not i will go with the fazer mod that's been mentioned here, thanks for that by the way. I will try and upload pictures of what I did. |

Well, I think you've found the fault anyway, but code 46 is typical of this failure. I've not heard of the regulator/rectifier unit itself failing, it's always the terminals, so the unit should be fine to use if you can securely remake the connections. Otherwise go for Bernard's FZ600 solution.
