hi, the breather box [below 'carb'] was modified on the second batch of bikes, yours being the original 08 model

Some were changed under warranty to the '09 onwards type of breather, it was not a recall, more a customer driven modification.

what basically happens is with motorway style riding the engine vapour does not get time to settle and flow back into the engine as oil so it enters the air box and needs to be drained through the hose, the newer type had more chambers within, so less problem.

iirc the newer box was under 20 thought a bu66er to fit.

take a couple of close up pics of yours so we can work out if your has been changed or not, fr- back- sides

As Stoic states Phil....

Mine just fills up slightly (5-10mm)over a few days of hard riding....

I drain the oil off,by removing the plug at the end of the tube, then refit and off I go...no big deal really...From what Stoic says about it being a ***** to install the new box...maybe I'll continue like that for a while until I order a new one at my leisure.

Beware though and do not leave the plug off as it's a direct line into the air box,do this and the engine can suck in any dust from the atmosphere.

Photos of the breather box? which is below the carb? righto, will do that when i get 5 mins.

i drained the breather tube today, a tea spoon worth of oil came out. So if you dont do the mod is it just a case that you have to keep draining the breather tube? (which isnt that much of a hassle)

I never had the mod done on my 2008 bike, the dealer wouldn't do it at the time I asked and I couldn't be arsed to press them on it! However, it never really bothered/bothers me and, as you say its never more than a teaspoon or two, (always looks a lot more when it sits in the pipe though!) As long as you keep an eye on the oil in the frame and not get hung up on what's in the tube it'll be fine. I could buy the part for 20 or so, but the hassle of fitting it just isn't worth it. However, if I was working in that area and stripping it down for another reason I would do the mod.

I'll just keep an eye on it, it doesnt bother me if i have to keep draining it...i can live with that.

What do you mean about worrying about the oil in the frame? do you mean making sure you do regular oil changes? This will also be new for me as my other bikes you just take the sump plug out and the whole lot comes out, the Ten has a seperate oil take that needs draining too doesnt it? (im waiting for my Haynes Manual to arrive)

Hi, i think Pleiades means, checking the oil level. which has a routine,

warm the bike up, stop the engine, remove the dipstick from the -frame-, wipe it, drop it back in, lift out and check. well that's how i do it!

as for the breather if it's not bothering you why change?
