Alu cases / Racks ???
Hi
i am going on a long trip on my Xt this year, i need luggage, i am a noob cos ive never had luggage besides a tailpack before! so i was after just a big box at the back, you know the square kind that you see on adv bikes. do those type of boxes fix to a tubular rack or what? or do they have mounting plates like a givi top case? i would rather have a tubular rack and have a removeable box that i can leave in my accomodation whilst i am away. also any rack recommendations? fyi i dont have a lot of money i cant spend like 500 for a metal mule box or anything, maybe couple hundred max for my luggage solution thanks! |

trawl Ebay for Top Boxes you might find one on their, try to get one with its mounting plate as that will offer some hope of being modded to fit the rear of your bike (no idea what an XTR has on the rear for rack mounting). I modded the HB box and rack mount from my old XTZ 660 to fit my XTZ1200 with a drill and some bolts /spacers..
PS you'll probably find that the max rear load rating is 10Kg or less so bigger the box isnt necessarily better and overloading could lead to lots of other grief the best of which might be a high(ish) speed weave. Alternatively Ortlieb waterproof bags (or similar) work a treat and are easily strapped on/off and carried (just dont expect your dirty keks to come out smelling of roses in warmer/sunnier climes).

http://www.piaggiospares.co.uk/spare...N=5VKW07361000 why would the load rating be that? just due to how the bike would handle? its no like it would break the rack or anything is it??? lol to be honest i will go very easy with the luggage on and when i arrive at my destination it will immediately be removed so... its just to get me there really. ill be packing a tent, sleeping bag, some clothes a pair of shoes and then just odds and ends, it shouldnt weigh a ton but more than 5 r 10 kg probably |

thinking ill get that rack i posted and just a universal top box and plate so i can remove the box and ride around the area where i am stayin
it says max load for the rack is 5kg but the top boxes weigh 4-5 kg empty lol but i read that the weight limit is just a legal thing they have to state so that people dont overload their bikes and affect the handling |

Is the hard luggage only option for you, maybe you would consider soft panniers/luggage etc?

Pelli case
We had Touratech Boxes and racks for our round the world trip. So far after 17000 miles, 6500 off road miles. The racks have been fine, Angies boxes have been swapped for Wolf man expedition dry bags as she damaged her boxes in falls. My boxes are still ok but if I was buying now I would go for a TT or SW Motec rack with 1550 pelli case's.

Well I would suggest that the GIVI stuff is really good, they have a range of plastic and even aluminium boxes and racks and stuff. I have had them for years on my various bikes and I just buy a new holder plate and then fit the standard box from the last bike.....
