New service manual

Hi there. Has anybody tried the new released haynes manual for xt660 '04-'11?
Yamaha's oem one is comprehensive but its "pictures" are rather poor.
Any review would be : http://www.haynes.co.uk/webapp/wcs/s...egory_rn=34565
(Don't get this post wrong; it's not an advert.)

Thats a great find, I am more than happy with my manual from here being a supporter but I am still tempted to get that as well. I once tried to print off the service manual but cancelled it after 400 pages! The haynes would be a litle more garage friendly to be honest. You just cannot beat having the manual next to the work area.

I've got one ordered, should be with me early in the week. Like Tony mentioned, the Yamaha Service Manual is not really user friendly enough for quick references (even though I printed the whole damn thing out courtesy of work), that's why I've shelled out for the (not cheap) Haynes. I'll post up what it's like when I've got it in my hands and let you know whether its worth the asking price.

Having read these topics,
http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?...light=breather

http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=9013

I gather that the differences between 08 & 09 models are:

1) the seat
2) the graphics
3) the bracket that holds the rear brake line to the swing arm is painted for 09 model
4) the crankcase breather chamber -or oil expansion breather box- (pn: 11D-E5371-10) is redesigned for 09 model

So I guess there are no changes concerning maintenance and that the new Haynes will work just fine for our 08 models.
I'm eagerly waiting for Pleiades' and Tony660x's reviews.

Cheers.

Well, it arrived today and I've had a flick through. In past experience Haynes manuals vary a lot in quality depending on who did the disassembly and reassembly, took the pictures and wrote it all up. This is one of the better ones and seems to have been compiled by someone who knew what they were doing. It would appear that all four bikes it covers were actually dismantled to some degree in order to take photos and make the manual.

It is really nice to see instructions that take into account things don't quite work as simply as the Yamaha manual would have you believe and offer viable real-life solutions. The photos are the best bit, you can't get away from the fact that a real image is better than a diagram when it comes to actually working on the bike.

They've made a few gaffs such as stating a 22 litre tank for the Tenere and in the model history suggesting it came out in 2009 but hey, even Yamaha quoted the wrong tank size to start with! It's also a shame, like with all of Haynes products, its printed on cheap paper that will pick up grime and suffer badly from damp and spillages.

All in all, I'm quite impressed based on first impressions and yes, it does cover the 2008 Tenere (there's even a picture of one in the introduction!) I still think the Yamaha manual has its place in the garage, but for quick reference and to get the opportunity to see step by step photos it will I'm sure prove invaluable. We will see how oily the pages get in the coming months - always the acid test of a good manual...
