Header Tank Question - .: XT660.com

Hi Guys... can someone show me a picture of their header tank on the xtr..or XTX still the same... on mine. i have a hose comming from my raiator to the header tank,, then another outlet from the header tank.. down a wee bit from the top.... where does that go... does it double back an go back into the header tank via a T piece.. or does it just drain off to the ground somewhere... as mines keeps on leaking water from there, when the bike is running of course... can some one help me here please..... thanks. john

Sorry John I did not answer your second part of your question about the leak on the outlet hose.

I know of a few XT's that have had faulty radiator caps which leak & over full the the header tank when the bike is idling at operating temperature, the water starts to full the header tank around the 95C on the dash if the cap is faulty, remove the pipe between the radiator & header tank & observe if there is any water flowing before the fan runs, there should be no flow.

Yamaha have modified the XT's radiator caps from 2010 onwards, the spring tension is wound differently on the new cap, the brass internals are of a different design, the brass center piece now turns within the new cap where the old cap the brass insert was fixed, the pressure rating is still 1.2bars.

You can run the fan through the diag screen (Zone 51) then flip the skill switch & the fan should run. If that is all OK I would make sure your fan is coming on at the correct temp around 105C on the dash (zone 06), idle the bike until the fan runs, keep turning off the bike to check the water temp through the dash, the fan must run before 110 degrees C on the dash.

If you have a cap problem make sure you get the new model by looking at the date stamped on the radiator cap.

HI Kev, i asked you gain in your Kev section before id read this above, thanks... this could be a problem with mine, but really evcerything was running perfect when i had the bike tank in place,, so a cant see there being a problem,, but a suppose a new rad cap wont go wrong, but if ye answer my request question in yer kev section one,, that`l better ma chances of stayin RIGHT....thnkas, john

If a XT660 supporter asks a question in the open forum I generally wait for everyone to answer first, If you want me to reply ASAP ask in the ASK KEV section I will reply as soon as I read it.

Most parts are date stamped, it is handy to identify the problem ones.
