reliabilaty??
africa calls.if i sell my 3 bikes and buy 1 i can go straight away for 6 months.this bike has for some reason has pretty much come to the top of the pile.xt660z 2010
does anyone know of any major problems with this bike.will the engine be capable of doing a 30,000 mile round trip. |

No major problems with these bikes, some earlier model had a minor issue with flimsy wiring on the regulator but it seems these issues have all but faded, in case please check the threads on regulator problems with the XTZ someone will sure point you in the right direction. Other than that we can only praise the durability and reliability of them specially since many of our members have taken these bikes to far away places and with minimum maintenance except wear and tear of tyres, brake pads, etc etc. One lady in particular Jmo has flown the bike to the US and rode a massive round trip coast to coast, on motorway, deserts, snow rocky mountains you name it, she then went on to partecipate in the Paris Dakar with the very same bike (modded for the race this time) and actually came quite high in the rankings. The tank isn't that small � it may be only 22L but it's got good mpg � you should get around 200+ miles before the fuel trip (reserve) cuts in, but bear in mind that when this happens you still have nearly 1/3 of a tank left (fuel gauge is a bit pessimistic). Realistic range is closer to 300 miles.
Best I've had is 240 miles before the fuel trip came on � I went an additional 20 miles before filling it back up and the tank would only take a bit over 17L so I still had nearly 5 in there when I filled up. |

Bennybullfrog, I don't know where you got the information about the Ten having a small tank. It's got the biggest in it's class and has been well documented will give at least 60mpg in touring mode. 3 of us went around the Borders earlier this year and we were getting 67mpg.
I can get 220 miles before reserve which leaves quite a bit in reserve. The tank range is one of my personal prerequisites for a bike as well as the carrying capacity. The rear subframe is designed for panniers and if you look closely and measure the pipework, which incidentally goes all of the way to the underneath of the rear carrier, you will see that it is again one of the strongest in it's class. In fact is considerably stronger than the new BMW's. Again for touring the rolling chassis is one of the best in class well equipped and overbraked. Coupled with a well proven engine that has long service intervals and loads of upgrades to personalise your bike at reasonable prices, this bike has to be at the top of your wish list. Know problems so far:
-'08 model had a poor air breather design, sorted out in '09+ models. -Some early '08 had a problem at the reglator wiring loom connector, looks lie is it sorted out on new models. -The wiring loom below gas tank may do some ground contact. None of the above are big issues and can be fixed anywere with litle effort using "African reources" and 2 of them have been fixed on 09+ models. Honestly, I would prefer and old carb bike for a RTW trip, but the last time I went to Africa one year ago I was on a truly reliable bike -Suzuki DRZ400- and I end up with a broken conrod and a grenaded engine . I have done 40000+ km on the ten and even with all the the electronics and EFI I would use it in a RTW trip. About the gas tank, using crapy Morroco petrol I have managed to do over 300km per tank on trails at non-racing speed. have fun, j. |
