Buckled Wheel
I have just purchased an XT660R and noticed yesterday that the back wheel wobbles, it looks like the back wheel is slightly buckled but I think the tyre could also be misshaped due to being stood?
the bike is a 2014 and has done 1550 miles? could anyone advise? I dont want to waste money replacing tyres and such as they look like new except for a bit of cracking on the wall of the tyre.. I am based in Wigan so if anyone knows someone who could be recommended to have a look at this please let me know. thanks |

Have you had the bike up on a axle stand and checked it out?...check the axle nut etc...long shot BUT wont hurt none..
What psi is in it?..maybe deflate it and reinflate to a higher psi (as tyre shops do for a short time)to see if that helps Was it bought privately?..any chance of asking the vendor?.. All else fails take the wheel out and go have the tyre reseated... |

That's odd with such low mileage, but if it's been through dirt then it could be the rear wheel bearing? I'm no mechanic though, so just a suggestion

I have had it on the paddock stand and I think the tyre is mis shaped possibly wit being stood. the wheel may be slightly buckled but cant tell 100%
what psi would be sensible to put in to see if that puts the shape back to what it should be? |

As nikroc suggests, get the rear end in the air. Check the trueness of the rim by taping a rod/dowel on the swingarm at a right angle to it (so one end rests lightly on the rim), spin the wheel and see what happens. Have a feel for play in the wheel bearings as well (and the sprocket carrier while you're at it). I suspect it's the tyre though. Its probably rock hard and isn't round anymore!

I am inclined to agree that it is the tyre surely a tyre should last longer than 3 years though. they are metzeler tourance tyres which to me appear to have a flat sport and cracking on the wall of the tyre.

A tyre in normal use would not last three years. It would have worn out and mostly likely got replaced long before three years is up. Motorcycle tyres just aren't expected, or designed to last that long without deteriorating and hardening.
In the case of your bike, which has been standing, this deterioration will have been accellerated. A tyre sitting in one place with the bike's weight on it, slowly decreasing pressure, resting on cold concrete, atmospheric conditions and the fact it will rarely have got up to temperature in that period will all shorten it's life. Leaving a bike for long periods in one place on a sidestand is particularly bad and will cause one patch of the tyre to deform to one side too. |

I recently replaced the original tyres with Avon Trailriders,as did my mate at same time..totally transformed the bike's..stable,sure footed and quiet.

Tyres are your last and most vital contact between you and the road......I certainly wouldn't want to peel into a corner at speed on three year old tyres that are showing sidewall cracks!, also the rubber hardens up and loses it feel. A new set of rubber will transform the bike! Steve
