Stolen XT660X keys. Now what?
They broke into my storage unit and stole various things. Among them were also my second key and the red key from a 2008 XT660X.
Anybody knows what has to be done now? Will I need to change the immobiliser too? or something other electronic? Last edited by MjW; 16-02-17 at 09:32. |

Without the red key you're a bit screwed I'm afraid. The one remaining key cannot be re-registered with a new code without it, or for that matter any replacement blanks you get cut.
You can obviously use the bike with the one key you've got, but the stolen keys will remain registered to your ECU and your bike is at risk of being stolen (assuming they can make the connection between the keys and the bike). The only proper way round it is to replace the ECU, ignition switch, seat lock, petrol cap and get three new keys including a red coding key. If you get lucky you might drop onto a full set of the above used, but they won't be particularly easy to find. The other alternative is to do away with the immobiliser altogether by sending your ECU off to somewhere like Off The Road in Germany who can reprogramme it and disable the immobiliser. This will be the cheaper, easier and quicker option. For now, keep your bike in a locked garage and get yourself some serious padlocks and chains. The other problem you've got is, should the bike (god forbid) get nicked, insurance companies won't pay a penny out if the key(s) have been stolen. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. I feel for you. |

As a temporary measure could one off those immobiliser emulator module's sort out/bypass the electronics ,ebay item number 261585749443 and ask a locksmith to try and duplicate a key from one of the lock barrels?

Sorry, I should have added that, if you go for an ECU re-programme, you will still need to change the lock barrels and get new keys cut or the guy who's got your keys will still be able to pinch it! It will still be cheaper than the full ECU and associated kit from Yamaha.

Most keys can be cloned these days so getting a second key would not be to much drama, but as mentioned your bike could be at risk claim a lockset with new ECU on your insurance.

Finally it is done!
I paid a deductible, of 2000kr (~180, 210) and the insurance covered the rest, ECU, lockset etc. Total cost without the insurance coverage would have been around 15000kr, (~1380, 1575). They covered the other bike too, which I still had the red key. So I will get a new key, reprogramming and a disk brake lock without paying a deductible for the other bike, which was nice. |

Your post has been rather timely as I have been pondering whether to replace the broken steering lock.
Somebody tried to steal my XT the other night. They snapped the steering lock and tried to push it away. The idiot(s) got about 50cm before the big lock on the rear wheel stopped them. They obviously hadn't seen this in the dark and appears to be no other damage. I have been trying to work out what I would need to replace and how much this is likely to cost me. Can anyone give me an idea on this?

I hadn't realised that you could buy this part separately from the ignition lock.
They have managed to snap the pin that slides out into the yoke as well as the casing that this pin sits in. The yoke itself is ok apart from a small gouge. I had visions that I would have to replace lock , keys etc etc Hence my interest in the original post and their experience.
