Coding New Keys ?
So my first sub key (black) lasted about 70,000 miles and my second has lasted about 35,000 before they will no longer turn the ignition barrell. I'm now onto using the master key (red) which I don't like doing. I need to get some new keys quick! Question is, can I code new keys to the bike myself with a procedure or does it need to be plugged in by Yammy? I used to be a Toyota mechanic and on the old stuff the procedure was things like... opening and closing the door 6 times then leaving the ignition on for 60 seconds etc etc. I'm hoping an 09 Z is something similar (apart from the door opening bit) so I don't have to leave it with the monkeys at Yamaha and have my pants pulled down in the process.

Yes you can do it by your self.
one thing first, do not use the new key under any circumstances before this procedure, because the immobilizer will show fault code 52 and wont start. 1. Check the immobilizer light is flashing in standby mode. 2. Put in the red key and turn on and then off within 5 sec. 3. Insert the first black key asap (5 sec) and turn ignition on. then the immobilizer light should start flashing and the key is registered when it stops flashing. For multiple keys registration just put in the second key directly after the first key meanwhile immobilizer light still flashes. All other (now non registered) keys will be lost from memory. Only 2 keys can be stored excluding the red one.

Excellent, thanks man. Good to know I don't have to pay Yamaha stupid money for something so easy.

Another point to add is that once the registering process has started, if you have two keys, you MUST do both. If you buy a new replacement key and register only that one, the other black key (should you have one) will not work anymore. You can't go back and register a second key later. Every time the registration process is started a new key code is generated from the red key. The idea being that should you lose a key, reregistering the one still in your possession will render the lost key unuseable should it get into the wrong hands.

new key
Quote:
I own a 2013 Tenere 660xt in Mexico. I have been told by 3 dealerships that Yamaha Mexico can not recode replacement keys. I have the red key, but they insist my only option for new keys is to replace all lock-sets at a cost of $1,000 u.s. Thanks for the tip. |

So I looked up the part numbers for a new barrel and it looks like it can only be bought as a kit (ignition set, fuel tank lock, seat lock, Ecu etc) and will probably cost ninety twelve thousand pounds. I went to Yamaha and a new blank key is $100+ tax! Feck that! So, off I went to the local locksmiths. He examined my keys and said there is nothing wrong with them, they are steel and the tabs in the barrel are brass, so stands to reason they wear out first. He said for $23 he can fettle them and give them a new lease of life, hells yeah baby! So all my keys now work beautifully and my steering lock even works easily ( it was always a sticky *****). This locksmith was an old boy wizard and I asked about putting graphite lube in? He said definitely NOT! As most Moto ignitions are vertical the graphite falls to the bottom and has no where to go causing a build up which will eventually hinder the key from going all the way in. He sold me some of this
which he said will clean and lube the lock just with a few squirts a year. FWIW, if you are going to remove your ignition and clean it, just drill the heads off the sheer bolts. I tried tapping them around with a punch and chisel but those bolts are drowned in Loctite so wouldn't move. If you have a small blow torch you can heat them up to melt the Loctite then knock them around but I found drilling them easy enough
. I reassembled it all with normal bolts rather than sheer bolts as I'm not to worried about anyone nicking my old knacker, nobody's tried so far and it's been to some pretty dodgy places
