From January 1st this year all motorcycles over 125cc that were/are put through type approval (newly designed models) must have ABS fitted in the EU. From January 1st 2017 all newly registered motorcycles over 125cc will have to be fitted with ABS (even if they are old stock models - so look for a rush in dealers registering old stock in late 2016 and consequent bargains to be had!)

Interestingly, in addition to the above, smaller motorcycles (50cc to 125cc) are required to have either ABS or instead a combined braking system.

There will be no legislation to make retro-fitting of ABS compulsory.
