            XT660Z Speedo problem

Evening-2 quick questions if I may...
1.My chain snapped recently - I pulled the clutch in immediately. No damage reported to the engine; but I started the bike up- after removing the chain & the speedo is reading 6-8 MPH in neutral when I rev the bike. I imagine its a problem with the speedo sensor; which I suspect has been "****ted" by the chain!. Is this an easy fix or is it a new one & if so- where from & how hard are they to change ( diagrams if possible please!) 2.Chain guards- The original one is no more!- can you please recommend a metal replacement or does anyone have a plastic original one they might consider selling please? I was not sure if I should post this in the Kevs Mods section. Regards Rod

             (1) The speedo sensor would have almost certainly have bitten the dust if the chain comes off - it's right in the line of fire. It is dead easy to replace. You'll find it on top of the gearbox and it is held in place by a single set screw. The part number is 11D-83755-00 but, now brace yourself ready for this... it costs an eye-watering 73 from a dealer!
They do occasionally turn up on ebay if you search by the part number. (2) As for the chain guard, I bought a stainless chain guard from Motorrad Planet on ebay like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kettenschutz-Yamaha-XT-660-Z-Tenere-BJ-08-Schrift-/191579856937?hash=item2c9b0ca029 They occasionally put the odd one up for auction which generally go for a little bit less. TBH though, they're well made and pretty cheap even at the full asking price.

Same happened to me in Buenos Aires. Quite exciting seeing my chain guard explode into a thousand pieces.
I got a new original plastic one. I think it was only about 20 quid.

Thank you Pleiades & UKbri- I sort of suspected it had bought it...when I get the new chain- I will check all parts etc & report back...at least it sounds straight forward to replace...once I have the mortgage in place!
I will also check the sprocket teeth at front & rear stock is 15 & 46????- it typically showed 10% over the actual speed- maybe the previous owner had altered the gearing. The hunt will start for a chain guard also!! I'm editing a film to be released - it does include an XT660z- here's a small sequence...I hope you enjoy it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2NWB9yGv6A (if you cant see it...let me know) Thanks again! std sprocket sizes on my 2015 Tenere are 15/45.
I enjoyed the video, I recall riding the road to TanTan 10 years ago, it hasn't changed! |
