70 000km on clock; good or bad buy??

Im looking to buy a 2nd hand xt660z Tenere. This one has 70 000km on the clock. Although the bike looks clean and runs good, 70 000km seems too high. STock standard.

Yes or rather no?

I'd want to get the bike for a seriously reduced price. The mileage wouldn't worry me provided the bike has been well maintained but I'd prefer a lower mileage machine if you have the choice.

Hi David,
yes, the bike is clean and all. But my thinking is that I go for a while then it starts giving me wear and tear problems at 85 000kms and more. I know the engine is bulletproof, but I rarely see bikes with such high milage advertised. Should I neg a price and then use the balance to upgrade? the mileage though....yikes.

Ps- how does one post a pic on here???

How old is it? 70000Km isn't unreasonable on a well-maintained 2008 bike, but it's a lot on a 2013 bike!

Just sign up to any image hosting site (such as Photobucket, Flickr, Dropbox etc…) and upload your pictures. Once you have your pictures hosted on line, they'll each have their own URL (web address) which you can then link to in your posts here.

Once you've hosted your images somewhere on the web, all you’ve then got to do is click on the "insert image" button when creating your post and paste (into the pop-up dialogue box that appears) the the direct link (URL) to the hosted image you want to display. And that's it.

These threads may be of help too:

What's your annual mileage likely to be? I do 15k kms a year on my bike so I'd never be able to sell it if I kept it too long. Is there a routine inspection where you live? We don't have any MOT in Ireland so bikes cam get quite raggy. You could end up with lots of repairs on a bike like that. Cush drive rubbers, bearings, bushings and other moving parts are all likely to need attention on that bike. Haggle hard!

Before I bought my first XT, I saw a guy riding one and asked: You wanna sell? Yes he said, in another 60 000km. Where are you now I asked? Only 90 000km. My first one started to give me propblems at 150 000 he said.

What problems? I asked.

O, I had to replace the rear wheel swing arm bearing and the valve stem seals.

I bought an XT, and never looked back. (Well, sometimes I do, when the KTM's cut out

If the bike is well maintained give it a go. Back in the days I was into getting bikes with low milage. But at now a days I changed my opinion. I would rather buy a bike with high milage because the engine got this far. So it will get much further. BTW my 2008 Z has 93000 km on the clock and it seems the engine's running better than when it was new:-). It doesn't consume any oil. The bearings are still stock. No rectifierer problems. My concern with low milage bikes imho is that you don't know how the engine was breaked in. How the engine was treated when it was cold (high rev when it was still cold). With a high milage bike as yours, you can be sure that the engine will last and won't crash. Just my 2 cents.

Cheers,
Marcus

I have another deal. The old engine broke and was replaced by the owner during an Africa trip. The bike has 40000km but the new engine only 8000km. It comes with alot of goodies but I cant say for sure how the new engine was broken in. Sounds like a good deal to me.....

Yes? No?

Your concern with this bike should be the bearings and the suspension if the bike went through Africa.
