Tenere Died
Hello
I was breaking yesterday with engine before roundabout when suddenly bike start to make loud metallic bangs and engine stopped. I can't start bike again. You can push the bike on Neutral and changing the gears seems to be working. I have noticed that engine sound is slightly different last few days but it was so subtle that I was thinking it is just my imaginations. I have checked oil two days ago and all was fine. Bike usually puffs when you breaking with engine and it did it yesterday as well but puff immediately change to big bangs. I think that engine blows up but I just want to check with you guys if anyone have any other idea that may give me little hope to use this bike again? I do not have money at the moment to replace engine ☹ Thanks Last edited by batmam; 07-10-14 at 10:47. |

Sounds serious, mine did similar thing except there were no strange noises, it just stalled while decelerating. If you can't turn the engine even in high gear than it could be a gearbox failure you can read about here:

Ahh, Thank you. Gearbox really seems to be very likely the problem. I don't think that seized engine would make such horrible noises. Damn, bike is not so old 4 years and have 20000 on the clock. Engine is pretty weak so stress on the components should not be so big and I 'm riding it carefully and slow like grandma, changing gears properly and doing maintenance every week.
How that can happen? |

Drop the oil and inspect it, see if there are any tell tale signs of things that shouldn't be there, particularly out of the sump drain. Also take the clutch side cover off and take a look at the primary gears.
It is not unheard of for the crank nut to come loose making horrible noises at first and then, if not sorted quickly, will ultimately work loose enough to mash the primaries and possibly lead to premature main bearing failure. These are both easy to check with the engine in the frame and worth doing first before completely stripping the engine. |

Bad News
Hi all,
I just heard from my friend- mechanic who is taking engine apart. What he thinks happened is that cam shift broke went to transmission and bike stopped. Crankshaft is bent. That means that bike 3 year old bike with 20 000 miles is ready for write off unless I find new engine which is unlikely. I dont understand how this could happen but I guess bike had some factory fault and Im really unlucky. Damn! |

Not sure if that could work for you but I have an engine in a box after one of the gearbox dogs failed on mine. It needs an actuating dog and a side case. It's a 2009 Tenere engine with 9000 miles on it. PM me if interested. |

They should examine that. But if one doesn't ask, one wouldn't get any compensation of Yamaha. Just my 2 cents.
