Handlebar clamp bolt replacement

Hi there,

First post - new to motorbike maintenance.

It looks as though I've managed to bend the bolt that holds the lower handlebar clamp in place. Number 12 in http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?...andlebar+clamp

Is it possible to get a replacement bolt - if so where - I don't fancy spending 40 for a new set if 2 for a bolt will do.

To ride in a straight line, my handlebars are currently at an angle - there is no wobble and I'm now used to riding it (only since yesterday mind). Is this legal?

Many thanks,

Chris

Only the bolt needs replacing. Any auto store.

Brilliant thanks, does anyone know the size of the bolt. I don't want to leave the bike "in pieces" any longer than I have to. I presume b&q is the place to go rather than halfords?

Take it apart and measure the bolt. Make sure you get the correct threading. Japanese bikes with M10 and above has another type of pitch. I know, because the M10s holding the rear sproket doesn't have standard thread pitch.

Hi, if it's number 12 in the picture then it's not a separate bolt as it's welded to the lower handlebar clamp so can't be replaced with an aftermarket bolt. The whole handlebar clamp can be replaced for an aftermarket clamp that has a separate bolt, but your looking at about 30-40 for a set.

How badly bent is it? I bent mine previously and rode like that for a long time. I eventually took it off and bent it back in a clamp. Be careful though as it's pretty soft and could crack/snap where it attaches to the handlebar clamp, so I heated it up before and applied very light pressure to bend it back slowly.

Steel welded to alloy..... I would love to see that...

I think yer find if it is a one peice unit.. the bolt will be cast into the lower clamp..
most are a bolt that fits into a hex hole or round headed with a flat to stop the rotateing while tighting...
If it is round head a cap screw with a flat ground on it works...

Apologies for the bum steer pal. My 2012 ten has separate bolts to the handlebar mounts.
At least you'll be back on the road soon, good luck with your course.

Clarity

Hi, I think I've got the same problem after a tumble. The right hand side of my handlebars are higher and I think slightly off line as it fell square on the end of the bars. I replaced the bars thinking that would solve it but the 'bent' sensation obviously has another cause as there's no improvement. If I have understood correctly I probably need to replace the handlebar clamp on that side, or bend the bolt back to shape. Is the clamp available from Yamaha? Thanks guys.
