Engine stalling while making an overtake.

As some of you may know I bought a used XTX 2005 last fall but hadn't gotten my MC-licence yet. However after a lot of expensive lessons and some practicing privately I got the licence today, superhappy and super thrilled to finally take my bike out on my own! (Sweden have quite hard requirement tests for the licence).

Anywho, I was out on a ride and after perhaps 1.5h the F-trip showed up. I continued to drive and was on a road driving along at some 50km/h when I cought up with a tractor moving a fair bit slower. So I thought I pass it, which went perfectly until halfway passed the engine cut out. Nothing major though it started again without a problem. I think I was in 3rd or 4th gear when it happend but I don't think it was a regular engine stall, I mean why would it stall there at those speeds and the engine wasn't working hard either?

Does anyone have any explanation to what it could have been?

Later I was accelerating fairly quickly after a redlight and each time I cut the throttle to shift gear the engine was on the verge of stalling again but didn't. Atleast it sounded like it cut out a bit. Could it be related to low fuel? Thankfull for sugestions.

As Pepsi has mentioned, low idle speed is a very common reason for XTs stalling and well worth checking. However, a low idle speed won't cause a stall/cut-out whilst the throttle is open and the engine under load, unless it cut out at the point when you throttled off and used the clutch to change gear. Were you in the middle of a gear change when it cut out?

I reckon there may be a clue to your troubles in the first few lines of your post...

You bought the bike 8/9 months ago? It doesn't sound like you've used it a great deal in that time while you were getting your license. (Congratulations by the way!) Was it the same petrol in it when you rode the bike today and suffered the cut-out that was in it since you got the bike last year? If it was then it will have almost certainly "gone stale" in that time. Try some fresh fuel.

A good correctly gapped spark plug is absolutely essential in any single cylinder engine to prevent random stalling and cutting out. If the bikes been stored/left idle for some time, or just started and run for short periods then it isn't going to do the plug any favours. Do you know how old the plug is? For the sake of a few krona, its worth fitting a fresh plug.

To sum up, start with the simple stuff: Set idle to ~1500rpm, get some fresh fuel in the tank and change the spark plug. Then give it a good flogging to clear out the cobwebs!

Thanks for the help and congratulations.

I have been using the bike quite alot when I was out practicing privetly so the fuel was fresh and during the winterstorage I used fuel stabalizer. I don't know how old the sparkplug is though but that I will change.

Yes, if I can remember correctly I was in the middle of a gearchange when it happend. The same when I was at the redlight and pulled away quickly it felt as though the engine was close to stalling again when I changed gear fast. I will check the idlesettings as you guys have recommended. Thanks alot!

Thought I give you an update. I checked the idlespeed yesterday and it is at 1500 so the problem doesn't seem to have been there either. Yesterday I didn't have a problem at all with the bike during a 2-3h ride, although at one time during a gearchange the engine seemed to be close to a stall.

Will change the sparkplug and see if that helps.
