Unhappy What have I done to my Ten? :(

Hello folks,

My first time posting here.

I recently picked up a DNA Filter and airbox cover (quite cheaply)

So I took my seat off, removed the periscope. Fitted the new filter, the new airbox cover and the reducing gasket.

I now have better power in low revs... Got rid of chugging in gears 2/3 and 2nd is actually quite insane now, nearly spun out on a patch of gravel!

However, 2 problems:

I have less power in higher gears, overtaking speeds (60+) feels like it's being throttled/choked a bit.

My Fuel trip now comes on at around 180miles, when before I could easily get over 200 miles before trip meter came on.

I've done 4,500 miles so far. Bought from new in March, Metzeler tires.

The only thing non-standard is the Scottoiler vSystem I fitted last week.

Anyone got any ideas?
I'm a bit stuck!

Many thanks,

Weave.

Yup. You are running too lean.

Firstly, you need to adjust your fueling when you run a high flow air filter. Two options;

1) A PC-V, cira 200
2) A KevMod, you'll need to PM Kev, the only one I can find on eBay is the KevMod +O2 tuner.

In the short term, I would swap your OE filter back in or you risk causing damage to your motor. At least until you've sorted out the fuel mixture.

I would recommend going for the O2 Tuner too, this increases fuel efficiency and makes the bike very smooth from low revs (and takes about 5 minutes to fit)

I run my ten with a K&N air filter for almost 70000 km. No problems with fuel mixture or damaged engines.

Fine, so have I on a transalp. But the OP is reporting running problems associated with lean running apparently caused by fitting a new filter. It makes sense to roll back the changes until he can do something about the lean running.

Thanks for the replies, folks.

Tomorrow I'll put the stock filter and periscope back in...

Then I'll order the Kev Mod!

One thing that confuses me, though:
If it's running lean, I.E. More air than fuel... How can this make my fuel consumption go up?

Basically the engine will not be running efficiently, making less power at any given rpm. Lean mixtures tend to want to "explode" more easily, but in an uncontrolled manner (pre-ignition etc), hence the reference to engine damage.

If the air fuel mixture is too lean, it won't ignite properly and you will have wasted that particular charge of air/fuel. To compensate, wider throttle openings need to be used to maintain an equivalent road speed to that on a correctly fuelled engine.

Essentially the motor will be running way outside its zone of efficiency, which equals poor economy.

You should have read my post more carefully. If so, you would have recognized that I replied to Gas_Up_Lets_Go post, not to OP post.

K&N.... it doesn't allow anything like the same amount of air through as the DNA.

I'm sure Kev will pop along with the technical reason soon, but in laymans terms, your bike struggles, you give more throttle to compensate (and thus, more fuel), but the AF stays the same, so more air too, and the cycle continues.
