Used to do quite a bit of in the early the early/mid eighties as a schoolboy on a Fantic 240, and later on a TY250 in senior events with the Craven Motor Club. I lived near Harrogate then and there was a massive trials scene at that time, I packed it all in when I went to university in 1988 aged 19 and never started again. Sadly, I believe the Craven Motor Club (which is where all the Lampkin family cut their teeth) has folded due to a ageing organisers and lack of new young riders. I think that nationally trials riding is going the same way, no kids taking it up, it just isn't glamorous enough anymore - bring back Kick Start I say!

I'm seriously considering about starting again, but there is a pretty much non-existent trials scene in Norfolk and the modern bikes, although lighter and far superior than those I rode, are too costly and expensive to maintain. The beauty of trials in the old days was it was THE cheapest motorcycle sport to do. However, I'm actively looking at getting a pre-65 bike to start trialing again, I can justify the costs involved and the standard's about right for a has-been!

Jase, was it off ebay? saw a gooden on there recently! As for the costly maintenance, i would disagree slightly, you can pick a decent bike up for less than 1500 and after that i've found it cheap enough to maintain and keep the bike running. With the bike being 8 years old im not too fussy over scratches and dropping it, i cannot imagine taking out a 7k repsol 4rt and thrashing it about though!
As for difficulty, its a tough sport on the whole body and takes some getting used to, especially in the forearm department! You soon notice when your out of practice!

One thing i do like about the trials scene is that there always seems to be great vibes and not too many disagreements, more than can be said for motox / enduro meets id say! Could just be my opinion though!

Bought it at the beggining of the year and had a bargain, it has been well looked after and was only a few miles from me, been toying with the idea of selling as i dont have much time to use it with the other two bikes and going in for another operation soon that will put me out for another year.

Its difficult to find time to ride them sometimes, especially if there is no real designated practice ground locally! We have two within an hour of us, and potentially one re-opening about 200yards up the road which would be more than ideal!

mmmmmmmmmm making me fancy an upgrade....but then I think, my 2004 gasser never lets me down, and will always be more capable of what I can throw at it...so why bother!

Looked at a moden trials bike meany times..
Almost bought a Beta... I will never be compeitive
on a moden bike..where at least on the old 1977
Montesa cota 348 I am in the classic/twin shock trials events.
The course's are set out as they were in that era with
the same rules "Non stop"... And great layed back fun..
