My first puncture!
OK, So, I passed my test last week and this evening i got my first puncture...a nail in the back wheel of a tubed tyre (I suppose that's what I get for passing first time!)
I picked it up 100 yards from a petrol stn and half an hr from my gf's home. I carry a glue cannister thing you put into the tube to form a seal and hopefully get you home. I fired that into the tube (seemed to work very well for 1 from lidl!) however the petrol stn compressor was out of order so i did not get to test if the glue stuff had worked. I had to call my GF's dad with his van to come and get me so we wheeled the bike into the back and i was home an hr later. I'm kinda glad i picked it up and not some poor foreigner on his GS adventure, also thinking WHY ME?!?! What happened when riding: I was in a 40mph zone following an arctic lorry, going along fine then started feeling wobbly. At first i thought the road surface was throwing my balance off a bit as it was very poor but then when i went to take the corner the bike would not steer (even when it was rear wheel that punctured) so i popped on hazards and pulled off the road. Questions: I am a new rider thoroughly enjoying my XT-R, So what should i do now? Get a new tube and fit it myself? get a tubeless tyre from my dealer down the rd? get a tubed tyre elswhere? I see puncture repair kits for tubeless tyres look decent and seems more of a reliable fix if you get into bother. I fitted a 12v socket to my battery so guess what my next purchase is?! a mini compressor haha! Just thought i would share my tale with any other inexperienced riders. Cheers

Tubless tyres winna work on spoked rims. Get a bicycle repair kit and fix the tube yersell. Cheapest option man.

Had a similar experience last Autumn in remotest Wales. Used the compressed can to inflate it as best it could but, like you, couldn't get the garage's air compressor to work (waste of 50p!). So had to do 30 miles at slow speeds to get back to base. Man, was that tyre hot!

Got back from a ride 2 months ago. Went to lube chain whilst still warm, when I saw a nail head sticking out of tyre!!! Pulled it out with pliers (bad mistake...), &: ssssssssssssssssssssss............... all air went out.... AA man came out & put can of 'Slime' into tube, then inflated. Was fine for a week before I got new tube at dealer! I think they do an emergency kit to get you home - could be an answer. Still, its just really bad luck I guess!!

Don't patch it not worth it, just buy a new tube and remove the sharp before putting it in

Pump
Hi all
Reading this thread got me wondering about carrying a small pump?? The problem with the XT(R) is that there is no space under the seat for a pump I am thinking more about off road and having to lower / raise tyre pressure. Does any one have any good ideas for carrying a small pump? and what type? PS: those tyre gooop things - dont they fill the tube with muck that cant be removed once they have been used? I have never had a puncture on the bike (Probably just Jinxed it) but tried changing tyres myself and man its tough unless you have the right tools. Cheers Marc |
