Slime
Got back from a ride yesterday evening. Let the X cool down & went to put her to bed at around 6pm: I suddenly noticed the end of a nail sticking out of the back tyre
I pulled it with plyers &: 'sssssssssssssssssssssssss............' all the air came out!!! I called my breakdown company - they said if its a tubed tyre, they'll truck it to nearest garage & get tube fixed. Bit of a problem when its a long bank holiday! Anyway, a nice (biker) AA man turned up half an hour later & filled tube with Slime. I haven't ridden today, & intend to get new tyre/tube in the next week or so anyway, but not sure about riding (apart from getting to tyre centre) in the meantime. AA paperwork says don't exceed 65mph & get permenent repair within 500 miles. Anyone got experience of Slime???
PS: apparently is a water soluble 'new AA' version.... |

Hiya, I use it in all of my bikes (3 of them), both tubed and tubeless tyres. No problem with it at all, there are slightly different versions available for each type of tyre but not sure what the difference is if any, doesn't seem to make much difference lol. On the 660Z which I do a lot of green laneing on I nearly always find several punctures caused by thorns that have sealed when I remove the tyres. The most has been 4 on one lane where the thorn hedge had been freshly cut... tyre was soft but not flat and top up of air lasted rest of the day.
Only thing to watch is that the tyre can't be balanced properly, mostly a problem if you refit a tube that has already been "slimed up", the other I have noticed is if the bike has been sitting for a few days between rides, the slime settles and takes a mile or two to get redistributed. As it is water soluble tubes can be wiped/dried and patched without any trouble, my local tyre fitter seems happy enuf as long as I tell him the tyre/tube is treated before he removes them from the rim. Well worth having as far as I'm concerned. Cheers.

Thanks Irishguy.
I have checked pressure a couple of times over last 24 hours & it seems to be holding up OK. So does the slime stay liquid then? The AA guy saids its water soluable, but in any case I should get new tube ASAP. You mention the first couple of miles riding to re-distribute the stuff: can I expect nasty vibrations for a few minutes, or will this continue until permenant repair is carried out?? |

I bought some "slime " aswell but it says to put into tyre after you get the puncture ,i take it there are 2 types then ,one to prevent flat tyres and one you use after it"s flat ??

It's a thick solution with many small fibres in suspension, these fibres stick together if they are forced through a small hole, the difference in pressure causing them to sort of lock together by friction between them. I use it as a preventative measure. If the hole is small it will last well but high speed running will cause the solution to leak due to centrifugal force. In its natural state it sits inside the tube or tyre as a gloopy liguid, rotation of the wheel causes it to be distributed evenly around the inside surface.
Get it checked and repaired sooner rather than later to be sure. Cheers.

Hey Iriishguy, that about explains it, including max speep of 65 mph mentioned on the paperwork. I'm just curious as to how long I can get away with limping along....

I've ridden from the North of Italy to home in Ireland after a small puncture on the off-road Stella Alpina a couple of years ago, the Slime held well even tho we were pushing it on the French Autoroute. I did spend a lot of time checking tyres each time I stopped tho... I normally carry a spare tube on tours like that, (as well as tyre levers and tools to remove wheels). There can be a very slight imbalance of the wheel after you first put it in the tube but it soon goes once the Slime is distributed. I run knobblies on the Z so the ride isn't as smooth as on pure road tyres anyway.
