After reading this forum for quite a while now I can't really think of any glaring faults to look for. It's keithblade said, it's a pretty rugged bike.

I guess look for the usual stuff like worn sprockets/chain, dented rims, scratches, a service manual with stamps in it - that sort of stuff.

The regulator rectifier is the only thing that sticks out on the older bikes, but even that is probably sorted by now

Good luck

As above really, plus look out for possible saggy shocks on 10K+ bikes. However, I'd add that none of the points mentioned should stop you from buying a machine, they are all (even the rec/reg) fairly simple to put right - just make sure you factor it into the price you offer.

hunting down a good 'un.

This is the only thing really. To the extent that if you offered me a bike with 20,000 miles on and a box-fresh aftermarket shock, it would probably be a better buy than one with half the mileage and the OE shock.
