Where do members live ???
I would be interested to meet other members of the club for ride outs and to share info etc. Unfortunately there doesnt seem to be anyway of telling where people (in the UK) live.
Ive seen on other forums a map of the country with coloured dots indicating which town or area people reside, the dot is a hyperlink to the member. Is this something that the moderators would consider posting ??? Im convinced this is a useful tool and would be used. If this is not possible then perhaps anyone in the East Kent area would like to get in touch and let me know where you are and if youre interested in meeting up. |

I have seen this on other forums, however I've never been too keen to add my location to a map as it shows where you keep your pride and joy at night.
Same as Gumtree ads, if you forget to un-tick the box it posts your exact location for the thieves to target your property when you're out. On the positive side, it says on the right hand side of the screen whenever you post where you are from. >>>> |

It's not within the power of a moderator I'm afraid.
If you ask the Captain really nicely,,,,, he might be able to look into it.

Hi chaps, personally I don't have any problem with highlighting where people lives, and the fact is some members do fill their application forms stating their location other don't and these have a reason of privacy for doing so, which I and everyone has to respect.
However a couple of years ago, I prepared a database in a thread asking those people who are willing to be summoned for a ride, to let us know their location and their preferred terrain & weather conditions, so that we can contact the members which fill the criteria of a particular ride. the link is here: http://xt660.com/showthread.php?t=7848 some people filled their details in, other didn't and the rest forgotten to keep the thread refreshed from time to time. I suggest you use it as it is the next best thing to have nothing at all. Cheers Last edited by CaptMoto; 05-04-12 at 21:09. |

In response to Grim Reaper The idea being you dont post your actual address but your location, youve already got this on your posts Renfrewshire. If this was on a map and I lived in or near that area I could contact you asking for example about local dealers.
CaptMoto This would be a map made from peoples current data, there would be no need to ask people for information this can be taken directly from their profiles. The map could then be a permanent feature at the top of the forum. If I spent many hours trawling I guess I could go through everyones profile and make a list of people in my area, this of course would take a considerable amount of time. The idea of the map being that you can easily locate other members in and around your area. If people dont want there location published then they simply dont add it to there profile. |

You need to establish a good system for peoples locations, some may put "London" others "Hackney" or "N/E London" or "NE London" or "North of the river, London" or "LS1" or "LS1, 2RF" or "LS12RF" - all meaning the same thing.. Some might put the county, some the area, such as "Cumbria" or "North Lakes" or "Lake District", the permutations are endless. So it's not as simple as extracting the information, there would need to be an exercise to put all the information into an acceptable format (for a system to plot it on a map). There is also the question of licencing for the necessary software and server capacity both in terms of power and storage. And ultimately funding. It is complex.

I didnt expect it to be an easy task but I thought a cleaver IT chap could knock it out in a few hours. Not knowing about storage capacity, server space and licensing etc, but in terms of funding I thought money generated from members could be used to set it up?
As for location details I agree it could be slightly difficult but if you live in London whether its north of the river, south or a specific district, you still live fairly locally to each other. I wasnt expecting a precise dot over a specific street just a general guide to location / town / area. This IMO would be a useful tool and one I think members would use, certainly if I knew of another member in my area who was having problems with their bike, not to handy with the spanners I would invite them round to assist and help them learn how to service and fettle there own bike. This would only be possible if the member new who to contact locally to them. I would ask that it be considered as a serious suggestion and not just dismissed without further thought. Many thanks. P.S. If I can assist in any way I would be more than happy to help. |
