Winter proofing spokes...
Hey guys, any suggestions on how to prevent my spokes crumbling with rust this winter?
I`ve meticulously painted copious amounts of ACF-50 onto them, but just wondered if anything could be done on top of that, as its the problem area for my bike in terms of weather attacking it. - A known issue seems to be the spokes, which is shame, as other than some furring on some of the underside bolts, everything else seems ok. I do however, live right on the coast next to a sea loch, so coupled with Scotland`s arctic winter that is inevitably round the corner, and the spray of salt from the sea, I'm struggling to keep it in good condition and its under the biggest Stormex you can get. Crikey its only done 2500 miles since new, so its a bit disappointing to see rusty spokes, back and front. Also 2nd question. Any suggestion of paint to repaint springs on Yam centre stand? I gave the small one a bit of abuse trying to do the coin trick first time around, and now some of the paint has come off and I cna see bare metal. Obviously this maybe an ideal location for rust to attack, so hoping that i can seal it back up. I assume its powder coated but is there a small tin of something i can use? Ryben |

I've found ACF-50 on spokes has generally done the trick, reapplying it once a month or so. However, in the dark ages before such marvellous inventions I always used normal grease smeared on with fingers on spokes and chrome rims. Another good rust proofer is chain saw oil, it's very sticky and a bit messy to apply (watch discs) but seems to last the winter and is resistant to power washing too.
For touching up small, non-aesthetic stuff like stands and springs I've sometimes used Hammerite satin finish black, but more often than not just grease or oil them. |

Another ACF50 fan here. I used to jib at the price, but it lasts well and does seem to stop the rot.

Me to.
Used in on the boat for years too. Put it on and leave it, don't clean it off till spring - if you need to re-apply, put it on top of the old stuff. Oh, and use it all over the bike.

ACF 50 works for me.
GULG - do you have a submarine or something - is your boat made of mild steel and does it actual float?

It did when I sold it... but a bloke from Blackpool bough it, and had never piloted a boat before, so maybe it doesn't float anymore....
Actually, he'd never fished from a boat either, so maybe he just got seasick and sold it on again! <edit> - Sorry, just 'got' your post, mild steel ........ tsk! no, but on non-SS metals like cup holders, rod holders, radio/mike mounts etc The trailer was steel so many parts of that too, towbar bits on the car etc etc
