Exclamation ENGINE XT660Z Tenere

Hi
My 09 XT660Z is in a mess. Lost 3rd gear (suddenly felt like neutral).
As soon as JT's in Swansea, Wales stripped the engine it was obvious that the engine was knackered due to all the bits exploding in the casing, it's also covered in swarf.
Is this normal on a bike with only 10,000 on the clock?
The bike shop reckon that I'll need a new engine!
I need a new engine....can anyone help?
Can you drop an XT660R or XT660X engine into a Tenere, are there any complications in doing this, ratios etc?
If I was to replace the broken and pitted parts, how much approx?
Thanks
Math

Bad Luck Mathew,Yamaha test these engines to destruction and for 660cc it is in a low state of tune so something is definitely amiss for this to happen. My XT is on 47k and is regularly bounced of the limiter with no problems.Item number: 120771488540 ebay is an engine for 200.Good Luck
PS I would want to know what caused the damage in case you have to repair your motor so that it does not happen again.

Unhappy

Matthew, I take the bike is out of warranty? It might be worth a plea to Yamaha anyway ,if you're the original owner and you've got Yamaha service history.
Regarding repair or replace, if it's like you said, the broken gear has been circulated around the rest of the motor, I would have thought a second hand engine would be cheaper. Parts, particular gears are expensive.
Best of luck

hi john, i recently went through this and to my suprise the third gear is 15. something plus the vat and the forth gear was just over 18app the dearest part in the rebuild was the head gasket at around 28[which is typical]. for the two gears, 5 gaskets, timing chain, chain guide and stopper lever came in at 170. ive rebuilt a few damaged ktms and this is chicken feed compared.

the 200 ebay may be worth a punt if as kev says the sprocket can be made work. no harm in checking
