What's the story in Balamory? Wouldn't you like to know?
Or if you're over five years old, a trip round Mull.
Sunset at the campsite just south of Oban. On the ferry to Mull. The inflatable tent. Was two cars and two bikes no way would that thing fit on a bike. Had planned a lil trip round the south but someone lit the BBq and shoved a can in me hand so that was me set for the afternoon. No bad thing as the rain came so we went to the pub. Chattin to a local, GS owner, he gave me the virtual tour of the island and promised good weather for the next day. He wasn't wrong, all the others had gone off to Iona in the cars, so I'm off on me own in the morning mist, geet up. |

From Craignure I head north and turn off at Salen then take a right a few miles down the road to follow the coast. There's not many roads on the island and I'm planning to do the lot, even got some of the dead ends to do. Looking across Loch Na Keal at the cliffs, there's a road that runs along the base of these.
Laggan Bay View up the Loch Calgary Bay I lop down a deadend to Croig nowt much to see other than an awld burt. Head off through Dervaig and some fine hairpins, Loch an Torr. Take a left just before Tobermory and go to Glengorm Castle where there is a very good coffee shop at cheap prices so stop for a bite to eat. Just as well coz Tobermory is swamped with folk. After the solitude of the open roads it's all a bit much so I don't stop, but long enough to get some essentials. |

Didn't look like anyone hurt so I took a pic, a reminder that these roads need a bit more attention, and playing 'passin place chicken' sometimes doesn't work.
South from Tob and a right through Glen Aros back towards Dervaig where I take a left through the middle bit. Back down the road I spot the waterfalls the GS bloke told me about so stop for a bit. There's a couple of falls either side of the road. Before it drops over the sea cliff. This was a lot higher than it looks and was as far as my testicles would allow me to the edge. Pop back to Salen for some petrol 1.50 a liter and go back round the other side of Loch na Keal Wee road between the cliffs and the sea. Then cuts inland through the trees, lots of people eagle spotting here. |

Back on the A road to the campsite.
Next day was grey cold and tippin doon so had a lie in then wimped out and sat in the back of a car. Final day me all packed up and set to ride the 400 yards to the ferry. Grey start but the rain stays away and the suns oot. Do the scenic route home via Loch Eck, Dunoon ferry, Ayr and the A712 to Dumfries and home. Mull, well I'm sure I've had better days on the tarmac but I really can't remember when. The scerery was stunning and changed dramatically, I'm in the highlands, on the coast, in the Med, the lakes, Kielder forest. Ferry was 37 return from Oban and the campsite was about 8 a night for small tent 1 person, canny site, but set pitches and you can't park next to the tent so bikes were left in the carpark 30yards away. Good pub 5mins walk. |
