Question Right Decision?

Hi

New to this forum. I have debated and reviewed in depth what dual purpose to buy, and have decided on a XT660T 2008 9k on the clock. I am a large guy 6,4 130kg so bike size was a consideration. Reading the reviews it appears that the 2008 has a surging problem, that cant really be fixed. This concerns me. Am I buying the right bike, or rather the right model. Maybe look at a younger one, that does not surge. Constructive feed back would be much appreciated.

Do you mean R ?

Have you considered the Z, these are much taller and don't suffer any of the problem you are concerned about.

Cruiser

Im not too far from you for size, 6ft 4 and 16 stone (100kg, then say +10 kg for kit and a few pies!!!)

Ive only just bought a different bike after 3.5 years and around 37k miles of my own riding on my 06 XTR. To say the least i loved the XTR, it had enough power for me at the start and was great for commuting, scratching on country roads, week-2 week solo touring, off roading, etc etc.

After a year or so of ownership i bought a DNA stg 2 and kev fuel mod to A. get a bit more power as the R/XT is a bit underpowered when you are fully loaded and took a far bit wringing of the neck in standard trim and B. by this stage i was use to the bike a bit more so wanted a bit more power for over taking and fun!!!!

I got the bike standard with a tall yamaha touring screen, and at 6ft4 the wind would hit me just on the tips of my shoulder when i was sitting up straight.

Also only recently (around 40k miles) the rear shock has become a bit too soft so i was running a set of raiser links i only used for off roading all the time and allowed a bit for of a stretch at the lights or when getting the feet down.

Apart from this the only other issue i had with the bike was after around 80-100miles the seat feel a bit plankess like, so made my own version of an air hawk from a camping blow up seat. And at 20 was alot cheaper. Allowed me to do 350miles one day on a 2.5week tour/2500mile tour of england.

But i think it really all depends on what you want from the bike? or what your going to use it for?

Howzit, thanks for your input. Its really to play with. Me missus is not really into the bike thing. Hook on a trailer, and take in on holiday. I am in construction, which takes me to all the remote places in the country. On week ends not much else to do but explore.

I looked at it. Its taller, but the seat to peg dim is shorter. Due to a injury from Off road racing, cant bend my right leg like it used to. I thought the R had the same engine as the Z, why no surging on the Z?

The Z's main engine isnt different but the ECU, and air filter/box are from my reading knowledge the only main differnces which have been created to change the surging effect.

The ECU has been up dated with an up to date fuelling map for the bike as standard.

The air filter box is larger and slightly differently shaped, allowing a better flow of air into the engine.

Hi...I've had a xt660 for a few months now and yes..there is (was) surging..but a bit of careful practice on a quiet road using the throttle gently and getting used the "open and closed" positions and it cures it 100%..at low speeds it pays to be firm with your right hand..let your guard down and it'll buck and thrust..but open and close methodically and gently and it just goes away..lot of stuff talked about "uncontrollability" of these bikes and it's all rubbish..just ride with skill and care and it need never bother you...buy one!!!..they are truly magic machines..I'm totally hooked and you will be too!!!!..

Hi there, saw this thread and thought I'd contribute.
I have an 08XTX which I believe has the same gubbins as the XTR.

True there are a few issues with the bike's running as standard.

First I installed DNA stage 1 and stage 2 and kev's fuel mod; this definately evened out the power delivery across the revs and made the lower revs much more usable.
The bike still had the open/closed loop fuelling issue.

Next I replaced the ECU and wiring loom for and older version. (wiring loom 35 ebay and ECU about 110 from dealer.) ECU info http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=8546
This has totally smothed out the bike (even though I am using a butchered PCV map Top half dyno generated before ECU change, Bottom half downloaded from site, copy and paste lol.
Kev has since released A device to do the same job as replacing the ECU, http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=14746 , but I see maybe they are no more. ? http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=14746&page=16

And a 10 min mod to the throttle grip changed throttle response.
Anyway just my input as my bike is definatly a very different ride to the bike I purchased as standard.
