Why is the rear brake reservoir attached using soft tubing?
Hi guys
I just received my Hel brake line kit for my X, and was surprised to find that there isn't a hose to replace the standard rubber one joining the rear reservoir to the master cyclinder. Upon further inspection I realised that as standard this hose is much softer (can squash with your fingers) than the other brake hoses, and is only held on by jubilee type clips rather than a bango, bolt, and washer arrangement. I understand then that this hose (and reservoir) must be under less pressure than the other hose, and the brake caliper. How does this work? I thought that in a closed system the pressure is equal all over. Is the reservoir connected to the rest of the system by some kind of valve? Thanks Harry

What a brilliant question...... I'm sure Kev will be along (or one of the other mechanical geeks) to give you the full breakdown, but in simple terms;
The reservoir feeds into a valve(piston) that opens, then closes just before the pressure builds, so yes you have your closed system, but the reservoir and feeder pipe are not part of it at the time the piston starts to build pressure. Like I say, you'll get a full and propper explanation soon....

Yeah...it doesn't form part of the pressurised system, and there is effectively a valve in the master cylinder.

Ahh I see! Thank you for the quick reply guys! If anyone does know more and wants to explain it in a different way then please do! Would be interesting to find out how it works in detail.

my mate does'nt even run a resevoir on his DRZ!!
IMO - all it does is 'top of' the system i you have a bit of a leak, and it allows easier bleeding of the system.. |

That's what I was thinking. So essentially you could use anything with a lid and a hole as a reservoir if you wanted too. Coke bottle reservoir anyone!? :-p
