Why is the rear brake reservoir attached using soft tubing?

Hi guys

I just received my Hel brake line kit for my X, and was surprised to find that there isn't a hose to replace the standard rubber one joining the rear reservoir to the master cyclinder. Upon further inspection I realised that as standard this hose is much softer (can squash with your fingers) than the other brake hoses, and is only held on by jubilee type clips rather than a bango, bolt, and washer arrangement.

I understand then that this hose (and reservoir) must be under less pressure than the other hose, and the brake caliper. How does this work? I thought that in a closed system the pressure is equal all over.

Is the reservoir connected to the rest of the system by some kind of valve?

Thanks

Harry
