Before i take the plunge

Hi all - My first post to a site with lots of great info.

Almost ready to commit to a new 09 XTR - fair price at present in Brisbane Aus.

A couple of questions please?

Does the lastest model still have the surging issue?
I want to use the bike mainly for off road, so will do a few mods. The first being single exhaust (metal mule?). Mainly for weight and a bit more clearance. Can anyone comment on this sytem please - re: noise / fuel injection changes etc.
Also, what is an average fuel range please - say for gravel road riding?

thanks

Hi...from a happy 2008 XTR owner....and Welcome!

You sound very similar to me. When I first purchased my bike, I wanted MM 2to1 Exhaust...for the same reasons, plus the exhaust going under the bike did look a bit weird to me , then.

2to2 Exhaust do work better...plus you may get a warm leg/ engine with the MM 2to1 !

Also, my main worry was all the talk about Surging. Well, don't worry, and the 2009 model onwards has no serious problems/ ...hardly noticeable..have a butchers at this link....but Kev IS WORKING ON A MOD for your ECU anyway! (Kev is from Brisbane too!)

and fuel..you should get 100 miles before reserve.....

Welcome mate.

The metal mule pipe works well with good mid range power for off road conditions.

You would expect around 260/270 KMS from a tank off road & around 290/300kms on the cruise on the highway, full to empty depending on your mods.

All XT's surge to a varying degree & we do have ways to make each model ride a little better. I do have a working fuel/O2 mod that will reduce the surge on the 09 models, give me a shout once you have bought your bike & I will give you a hand on making it run smoother if you are not happy with it's fueling.

I mean... can you think of a safer place in the world for an XT owner to live other than Brisbane, what with Kev living there by your doorstep? I can't.

i did think the MM 2to1 looked similar to the XT600 exhaust. I wonder if it is the same thing, anyone?

Surging was really only the 04-06 models after that the ECU got a far bit of a change with the lamba probe in the exhaust etc. People still say they surge but its mainly them coming from 4clyinder bikes and saying the single is just not as smooth.

Not sure on the 2 into 1 exhuast but ive a set of 2into2 and the sound is very nice, similar to a motox bike but not just as quick revving or as harsh with the baffles in (baffles out its loud).

Best mpg ive got was 78 crusing at 65mph on motorway. But normally average around 60mpg on roads and depending on the off roading drops a fair bit over here in the UK as off roading is very stop start.

There was a post by a dude in Brissie who had his own 2 into 1 made up locally. Was pretty cheap from what i remember.

You looking to buy from Marooka by chance? They have some good deals at the minute.
