Question K&N or DNA air filter?

hi, i,ve got an xt 660 r with a k&n air filter on it, but i see in a lot of threads that a lot of you have the dna stage 1 and 2 air filters. can you please explain which is better and why and which is not so juicy on fuel. since i fitted the k&n i do about 10-15 miles more before the light goes on. thanks

I think the short answer is that a K&N stage one gives you better (more) airflow than standard and a DNA stage 1 is better than a K&N. That's on paper, but I don't think that you would notice much difference between the K&N and DNA stage 1.

The real gains start when you fit a DNA stage 2 as well, but only if you can modify your fuelling. The stage 1&2 allow that much more airflow you can afford to inject more fuel and get better power. Member use K&N stage 1 and DNA stage 2 without any problems.

The ideal fuel mod is the likes of a power commander (250 ish) but a Kev mod works fine for about 25 (or make your own for about 5). Myself and plenty of members use them.

Combine this with removing the snorkel and drilling the air box and it's good step up. +~10% bhp.

The DNA stage 3 is a whole other thing and definitely needs a power commander.

Don't forget that test carried out in this forum show that the DNA contains a certain larger percentage of HIGH FLOW compound that first of all ensures cleaner air is introduced to the engine for longer periods which means you get more miles bwtween washes (yes these filters are lifetime and are washable & reusable).

As for performance we have a dedicated post which shows graphs and charts with the relevant performances and the DNA was clearly the winner.

For more details on these proven claims read this thread:

Personnelly ive got a K and N stg 1 filter and a DNA stg 2 filter. I bought the K and N first from my dealer, then found a second hand DNA stg 2 on ebay from another forum member on here.

For the differences in the K and N or the DNA im not sure, all the charts, graphs and information point towards the DNA being better, allowing more air flow into the engine and therefore giving you a better bang from your engine.

But for the differences between a stg 1 and 2 is massive. The stg1 really just gave me a bit more low down grunt and more noise, the stg 2 gave a huge increase in power low down and up in the rev range, also the snap while getting back on the throttle

You need to try the stage 3 air box then, double the gain in HP & torque of the stage 1 & 2 filters combined.
