re. buffeting!
Hi, had an experiment on the buffeting from my new Ten . I strengthened the peak on my visor, thin strip of aluminum neatly glued to the inside front edge....definatly an improvement . Next I set off armed with two lengths of perspex and some gaff tape to try different heights on the screen. ...made no noticeable difference!! To be continued!! STEVE

Hi interceptor, will get some posted as my experiment goes on...going to get another original screen and shorten it inch by inch and see if that helps. On another note, the roads were dry today and the Tourance tyres were gripping, it really felt great to ride, even at running in revs and speed!! I'm really looking forward to West Cork this summer...I think the Ten will be in it's element. Steve

I have covered the gap between the headlight and the forks. great improvement just need to find some suitable material to make it permanent. Have tried a shorter screen also which did help.

Thanks Bonzo 1. It's a bit extravagant but I have ordered a new screen from where I bought the bike.. 50. I shall reduce it inch by inch, with a slight curve and a good finish. If it works great if not I can live with it....the bikes great overall. Thanks Steve

Have you had a look at some of the threads from a 'Turbulence' search Greatescape? There's a fair bit of coverage there too.
I see Redbikejohn has a nice looking handlebar bag on his Ten which I believe cuts a lot of the blast that comes up through the forks. |
Thanks Desert Racer...will check that out. Biking in Australia is a dream of mine.....one day!! Steve

The perfect solution for one person is going to be totally different for another as were all different shapes and sizes. What I would do is carry on your experimentation using tape and corrugated card (rather than the Perspex) and try out as many permutations of screen width, height, spoiler, diffusers, jammers, blockers or whatever else takes your fancy! I came up with my personal favourite (see 9 below) after messing about with card, tape and scissors for a couple of hours.
Here are all the things Ive tried in the six or so years Ive had the Tnr. Of course they wont work or suit everyone, but should give you some food for thought. BTW Im about six foot and a fairly standard shape! 1) Standard screen + bird comb stuck to the tank in the fork wells Reasonable reduction in buffeting. Comb kept falling off though; couldnt get it to stick well enough without permanently marking the tank. 2) Standard screen + DIY aluminium deflector Same results as bird comb, but didnt keep falling off. 3) Puig high screen Unsuccessful. The screen is too narrow at the top so, although the wind blast is raised, you get loads of turbulence round the sides making the situation worse if anything. 4) Puig high screen + Aerotrim spoiler Slightly better. Still the drag round the sides of the screen is a problem. 5) Cut down standard screen Works but Although you dont suffer buffeting any more, you do suffer from wind blast to the extent you may as well do away with the screen altogether (or buy a naked bike!) 6) Standard screen + handlebar bag (Touratech) Some improvement in buffeting, but wind still catches chin of helmet. 7) Standard screen + handlebar bag (Touratech) + 2x LED spotlights mounted either side under headlamp cowling Further improvement on the above. 8) As above + Touratech spoiler Better still. Wind blast hitting upper helmet, reduced buffeting, but peak can be a problem. Road helmet is fine. Turbulent air getting round the sides of the still too narrow screen the main cause of the remaining buffeting. 9) As above + DIY perspex 5 cm wide winglets fixed to sides of screen Almost perfect. The extra width really makes a difference. Only drawback is it looks a bit Heath-Robinson, but it works. Since fitted a 2cm higher Touratech seat and thats b0lloxed it all up! The screen aint high enough any more back to the drawing board Below are the most viewed threads on the forum that relate to buffeting on the Tnr and cover things like the bird comb etc. http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=9180 http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=15939 http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=18880 I'll try and dig out some photos of the various attempts I've had at curing things... |
