Thanks Pleiades....thanks for taking the time to write such a list of potential solutions. I'm same height, average build so its all relevant to me.....I shall get experimenting. Can I just ask if you have any tips on posting photos. ? I get the photo selected and click upload, it tries to upload but never does. I'm using a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphone, don't have a cess to a pc. Thanks Steve

Wow that's some pretty extensive R&D Pleiades, has a bug deflector been tried on the tip of the mudguard? Because when I drive the Bonneted Freightliner truck at work the windscreen needs washing off at the end of shift (covered in bugs, no bug deflector fitted on the bonnet above the grill). But when I'm in the Kenworth which has the 4 inch bit of Perspex on the bonnet, I can just park it & go home as the windscreens all clear.
A bit of a spoiler or plastic on the front of the mudguard to send the air up before it gets to the fork void my help?
Something else to experiment with on a lazy Sunday afternoon perhaps?

Something I did try recently once the Tenere was properly run in & could stretch its legs a bit was to tuck in with chin near the speedo reducing the gap between me & the screen, made thing a lot calmer the the speed increased by 5kms an hour with the same throttle position.

If you are using a browser to view the forum on your phone, all you need to do is have a URL for each image, it’s dead easy…

Just sign up to any image hosting site (such as Photobucket, Flickr, Dropbox etc…) and upload your pictures from your phone. Personally I use Photobucket. Their phone app is pretty good and it can be set to scoop up all your phone's images automatically so they'll be ready to use anyway). Once you have your pictures hosted on line, they each have their own URL (web address) and it is this URL that you need to use in your posts.

All you’ve got to do then is click on the "insert image" button when creating your forum post and paste in the direct link (URL) of the hosted image you want to display. Alternatively create the image tags yourself and paste in the URL. For example [IMG]URL_goes_here[/IMG]

Alternatively you can view the forum using the Tapatalk app (supporters only) and inserting images into posts is even simpler and can be done direct from your phone.

Yep. I've noticed this too. The taller your bar risers are, the worse the buffeting gets. You sit more upright and further from the screen.

I also neglected to mention that the fitting of a high mudguard helps too, reducing the rush of air up the channel of uncertainty (between forks and tank).

I had an old screen laying about so decided to attack it with a 10mm drill to see what happened all in the name of science.

Firstly my stats,
Standard seat, I'm 5'11" wear a conventional full face helmet (no peak), clear plastic headlight protector & I have some small spot lights fitted in the gap between the bottom of the headlight & grey indicator panel.

From what I can gather a lot of the buffeting is caused by the vacuum behind the screen & wind up through the fork tunnel. Looking at other tall screen bikes there is a vent in the lower part. So with that in mind the first holes I drilled were either side of the Yamaha logo near the top of the headlight cowling to direct some air up behind the screen. I also drilled some half way up, then in the sides.
Without the holes riding with the visor up with my lid, it would start to close itself at 95kph, with the holes it now stays up to a speed of 125kph. I can feel the wind hitting me lower down now across the shoulders rather than chin to face area. There is still a bit of wind rush around the head but doesn't seem so rough. Bit of a result there. But riding a motorcycle you are generally propelling yourself along faster then nature had intended so a slight discomfort is to be expected.
Previous to fitting the spotties I did also try filling in the gap under the headlight but felt the engine was running a bit hotter in this climate, so it didn't stay there for long even though it worked really well otherwise. Would be fine in colder country's I think.
Just a note on drilling the holes to, going straight in with the 10mm bit was better than a small pilot first, as the bigger drill bit would snatch more violently at the end following through the small previously drilled pilot hole.

Great stuff Desert Racer. .....and what a coincidence! , I was looking through my drill bits the other day trying to decide what size holes to make in the screen. With my cut down screen the buffeting is greatly reduced. ..in fact there is a sweet spot at 65mph where all is calm and quiet. However after a ride around on the XR with NO screen and NO buffeting I know it could be better. Just need to buy a new and sharp drill bit! Steve

Good report, I think I might give it a go,or add it to the ever increasing list..

Nice idea - good tidy mod. Another excellent Pooratech solution! :eusa_clap:

May I ask if it is essential to crack the screen and stitch it back with cable ties to gain the full effect? ;)

Absolutely but is imperative that the broken joint is also smeared with a healthy dose of silicon to or it's not a proper professional bodge job. The original screen (pictured) must of been struggling under carrying the importance of the XT660.com sticker and eventually snapped under the pressure. Tough gig. But Santa bought a replacement last Christmas.

The holes in the front could be drilled around any electronic wizardry such as Sat Nav's if you want to keep the rain directly of the back of them.
