badga 07-02-07 01:20

Avons the same as you old chum!!!. I used to run Pirelli Diablos on my shhhhhhh Husky 610s and they were supposed to be good. Didn't get much mileage out of em and bloody slippery in the rain. Especially on those big white bus lane jobbies aaarrrgghhhhh..... You (Fran that is) told me about the Avons when I got my bike. Now I've done over 3000 miles on em and they still look like they'll do another 3000.... Weeeeeeeeeeeeee

CaptMoto 07-02-07 01:42

Yep! that's right folks..... distanzia = long distance mileage on these tyres. :devil[1]:

zambezi 07-02-07 23:30

Does anybody know what it would cost for a pair of Avon D SMs, for supply and fit? I have emailed the mobile fitter who advertises on this site. Just want a rough idea?

If you buy them on line to be delivered they could be 87 for the rear
http://www.cheaptyres4u.co.uk/product.asp?ACTION=SEARCH

and 64 for the front
http://www.cheaptyres4u.co.uk/product.asp?ACTION=SEARCH

normally its anything between 10 and 15 to fit each

zambezi 07-02-07 23:39

Cheers Fran, I will see what the quote comes back at...

Skeeter 13-02-07 15:04

Sidcup Motorcycle tyres want 213.79 incl. vat for a pair fitted (not taking loose wheels in).

midlife crisis 13-02-07 15:09

How much will 'Bike Tyres On Two Wheels' do it for with our discount? (well done again Storm :thumbsup[1]: )

They do look tasty boots :smirk:

Tony the bloke at Sidcup Motorcycle is a nice bloke and a very good mechanic but he is a greedy sod and charges a lot.

order these

Skeeter 13-02-07 15:37

I don't think Sidcup Tyres is over priced, it's only about 20 more than getting them delivered and fitted by someone. I think it's worth paying that for the easy option of a ride in ride out service. I'm pretty certain it's about 10 cheaper per tyre if you take the loose wheels in.

Richard W 13-02-07 21:21

I'm running Road Attacks after getting no confidence from the pirelli's like badga. Great mileage out of them.

I've found Essential Rubber superb for both price and service. Handy for the city too. Very popular with couriers which I guess is a good sign.

Rear tyre was 90 fitted on bike.

Thanks for the link Richard I'll keep them in mind

zambezi 13-02-07 22:44

Have any of you tried the Road Attacks and the Avons? I just wonder which are better before I buy?? The chances of any of you trying both tyres is probably slim but it is worth a try...
BTW the 2 wheels lot have never bothered to respond to my email.
Z

CaptMoto 13-02-07 22:49

I have never tried other tyres than the 2 original pirelli and didn't like them and Maxxis which I liked but they last very little and now I am in my own little heaven with the Avon Distanzia, they last long, grip like **** on a blanket and I would never go back to anything else, but tyres are just a personal thing, so... everyone here has their own preferences.

AJT690KTM 13-02-07 23:02

Too right Fran, it is interesting that a couple of people say the have no confidence in the Pirellis, I have worn out my boot toe sliders with mine and wouldn't use anything else.

CaptMoto 13-02-07 23:11

I agree on the fact that the pirelli work well but they just wear so quickly and tend to square off after 700 miles.

zambezi 13-02-07 23:14

AJT660, have you ridden yours in the wet? (Silly question, I know the answer already ;)). I have very little faith cornering in my Pirellis when the road is wet. I need a tyre that is good in the wet and dry because I commute rain or shine.
Both the Avon's and the Road Attack's seem to be good in the wet going by what others have said. Quite a few people have said the Pirellis are a bit hairy in the wet.
Z

AJT690KTM 13-02-07 23:17

2500 miles, one front and two rears, not the longest lasting tyres i'll admit!!

AJT690KTM 13-02-07 23:21

I did ride in the wet a couple of times on the mtr01/02 that were originally fitted, didn't seem a major issue to me. But I really dont go out when it is raining!!! i think it spoils a good run!!

zambezi 14-02-07 09:43

I have just called up my local bike tyre place and they say the Distanzia have been replaced by Avon Viper Sport (His words, not mine). He quoted me 220 for a pair including fitting, ride in - ride out.
The road attack he will do for 200.92 for a pair, ride in - ride out.
Looking at Buck's link above, he is using Conti SM tyres which are different to the Conti Road Attacks, so now I am confused??? I do high mileage and if people are getting 1000 to 1500 miles from a tyre then I will be changing tyres every 2 weeks, which I can't afford!

:hahaha[1]: :hahaha[1]: :hahaha[1]:

I must admit, I've never run a tire that gives me as much confidence in the wet as my Maxxis. Can't wait to wear it out though so I can try out the Avons!

CaptMoto 14-02-07 10:54

Zamb, to my knowledge and also from looking at their official website, the Distanzia have not being replaced, go and have a look at the website link I posted on the first post of this thread.

Is that dealer trying to shifts tyres he is porbably lumbered with?? Phone Avon Uk and see if they confirm that the distanzia have been replaced.

Also 4 people here who are using them (me, MrT, Badga and someone else I can't remember) are having mileages in excees of 3500-3700 on the rear ones, which means they do what they claim.

That's expensive.

170ish for the pair at Essential Rubber, Ride in, Ride Out. Appreciate it may not be local to you though.

Almost embarrased to say how long mine have lasted - you'd think I was carrying the bike to work..:053:

I'll second that. I got 1700 out of the 1st rear, but that was a lot of dry miles. The front still looks new at 2000 miles and my 2nd rear has 300 on it.

I'm hoping I can eke 2000 out of my new rear so that I can go for a set of cut slicks for the summer... Maxxis do a very tasty pair...

CaptMoto 14-02-07 11:54

John, I have a mate of mine on londonbikers with a Husaberg he fit a set of those lovely slick ones and he told me that in 300 - 400 miles they were... totally mullered

nein 14-02-07 11:54

I have done 4000km on my contis and they already seem to be at the end of their life. Had no problems with them and are quite cheap (I also bought them at busters)

Bet they were an awesome 400 miles though!

CaptMoto 14-02-07 12:56

Undoubtedly, he loved them but he did say unless you are rich and can afford them you are in for a shock as to how quickly they disintegrate.

fruitbat 15-02-07 21:15

i just put some avon vipers on my xt last week cost me 130 for the pair fitted not had chance to give em a blast yet hopeing to sat hopefully they will do the job

pete

zambezi 24-02-07 13:30

I finally got hold On Two Wheels and I was quoted 220 to 230 for a set of Avon Distanzias, for fitting in Bromley, Kent (because it is closer for them than Guildford). That is pretty much the same price as my local tyre place. I might have to try the other place that Richard W was talking about.
Z

zambezi 24-02-07 13:55

Just got hold of Essential Rubber, they will fit the front and rear for 159 (70 for the front and 89 for the rear), ride in ride out. It definitely pays to shop around. They are in the middle of London too, which normally means they are more expensive. They work on a first come, first served basis and they have the Avons in stock. Guess where I will be on Monday morning? Good contact Richard W.

Richard W 24-02-07 15:02

Nice One.

I'll be in there soon for a new front tyre.

nyk 26-02-07 07:46

I fitted the avon distanzas to my xtr and .Icovered 2500 in all conditions and the are brilliant ,great grip in the wet gettig on the edge of the tyres on tight bends plus they are are a good price,The wear rate is great as well I think 6000 plus miles should be about easy reach well worth a try for commuting in all weather conditions,

CaptMoto 26-02-07 08:55

Good man, I am sure you won't regret your good choice. :headbang:

zambezi 26-02-07 23:02

I got my new shoes today!! I got a pair of Avon Distanzias and a new rear inner tube for 165, all fitted. I dropped the bike off, went for a fry-up around the corner came back, paid and rode off into the sunset (only to get the bike knocked over by a scaffold truck an hour later!)
Very happy with Essential Rubber and I will use them again, the staff were all friendly and gave me some good advice etc.
Z
PS too soon to say how I rate the tyres, I am still scrubbing them in...

Tony660x 26-02-07 23:30

Any chance of a picture of the tyre on the bike? I am considering a new front and this is the most probable option.

zambezi 27-02-07 09:35

I will post one as soon as I can get my damn phone to connect to my computer! Or you can look at the pics of CaptMoto's bike in the gallery he runs Avons.

CaptMoto 27-02-07 22:54

here it is http://www.xt660.com/gallery/showimage.php?i=499&c=2

Or are you talking about Avon ProXtreme Rain?
