Hand guards

I went to the bike shop today to book it in for its 1st service.

I happened to mention that I would be interested in a set of hand guards and the lass got the catalogue out.

She then informed me that Yamaha don't make hand guards for the XTX and after a quick phone call, she told me that they never have done :101:.

Correct me if I'm wrong but did they not have them on the official Yamaha website until a few weeks ago???

They don't make them they order them from other company and put yamaha logo on it.

Grim Reaper 23-09-11 01:56

Thanks for the reply mate ;)

maxwell123455 23-09-11 22:25

There are loads of hand guard types out there. The yamaha hand guards are really acerbis hand guards rebranded as yamaha ones. But you can find the carbon copy ones if you search for champion hand guards

Grim Reaper 23-09-11 23:15

Don't suppose anyone on here has a pic of these fitted by any chance???

Plus, can you still use the original bar end weights or do these get left out?

KTM hand guards ?

Hi,
I have the KTM ADV handguards fitted to my Ten (& Super Ten), which allow use of the bar end weights. No drilling/cutting required (except possibly to clear the brake banjo bolt) & only around 40 from KTM dealers.
Although plastic, they have been rigorously tested on both :103: , and survived unscathed, as have the levers.

Thanks again for the quick reply.

These are the yamaha hand guards that are really rebranded acerbis hand guards. They are quite expensive at around 70 but have an aluminimum bar around the back and can take some abuse with braking levers/finger etc. They do have a different insert than standard but i think it all comes with order of the hand guards. As i said before there are carbon copies of these hand guards called champion hand guards on ebay, but make sure you get the fitting kit.

I like the idea of the 40 KTM hand guards - my main reasons for wanting to install are:

1. As per my previous bike (WR250X with Zeta XC hand guards), very useful in filtering through traffic for avoiding cager's mirrors, especially when on mobile phone......

2. Wind protection in winter

So: are the KTM items any good for keeping your hands warm????

Grim Reaper 19-10-11 15:26

Sorry I can't answer that yet cos I haven't purchased any yet.

maxwell123455 19-10-11 16:59

Ive a set of the KTM guards on my Triumph Tiger and they do a good job of portecting your hands from the wind, just i wouldnt want to rely on them in a spill for hand protection.

Yeah yeah yeah............ Anyway, don't get me started on mobile phone use whilst driving, 'yummy mummy' school run, in-car arguing, etc.
I think I need a better horn as well as hand guards - any recommendations??

Grim Reaper 04-01-12 19:10

B#ll#cks

In the interest of anyone considering purchasing hand guards on the cheap, do not buy these as they do not fit. Stupidly I thought that the bars were 18mm, however they have an inside diameter of 14mm and are of no use whatsoever :sad10:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2807066795...ht_2068wt_1185

Grim Reaper 04-01-12 20:06

On 2nd thoughts, I might be able to make them fit if anyone has a 14mm insert and screw left over from fitting guards to the heavier bars???

Obviously I'm willing to pay for it, but I can only find full fitting kits on the net which tbh cost half the price that the guards cost.

Anyone???

feck 04-01-12 21:34

Acerbis rally 2's, not the cheapest but v nice indeed as far as good solid handguards go. Also check out 'ego barkbusters'...

Grim Reaper 11-01-12 22:03

Another update.

Someone recommended these;

Just for the record, they dont f#cking fit either:icon_rolleyes:

If you look at the 1st pic, the problem is the inside of the bars. You can see a smaller diameter within which stops the fitment in the 2nd pic from going in properly.

The 3rd pic is just to show the difference in length.

Fitments aside, even holding the handguards in position, they would not fit the XT.

feck 11-01-12 22:10

that seems like a bit of an excessive fitting for what it is...

check these out :

Grim Reaper 11-01-12 22:29

They look the exact same shape as the ones I just tried though?

Grim Reaper 11-01-12 22:48

Just done a quick search on them.

http://www.hondacrf230l.com/index.php?topic=176.0

feck 11-01-12 22:52

yep that fitting does look exactly the same... I know the ego`s i had an my old wr had much shorter expanders, but then again i also changed my yamaha std bars for a nice set of renthals which didn`t seem to have any obstructions in the tube... hmmmmm

Grim Reaper 11-01-12 23:06

There must be folk on here that have came across the same problem as I have?

What have you all done? Lose the bar end weight? Change the bars?

I thought the last set would have been a definite but that's now 2 different sets I'm having to return and awaiting refunds for.

The other problem appears to be not much room on the bars for the other fitment due to the cables. I cant believe a simple job of fitting a set of handguards is posing such a problem.

I have been eying some up too. Do any of the guards allow you to keep the bar ends on?

Grim Reaper 12-01-12 02:18

Next question...what size are my bars? 22mm? 7/8"?

feck 12-01-12 09:48

Std yammy bars @ 7/8 if I am not mistaken...

Grim Reaper 12-01-12 18:13

Thats what I thought...22mm and 7/8" roughly the same that's why I bought the first set but the 18nn fittings were way too big.

I give up. Not wasting any more money.

Grim Reaper 12-01-12 20:06

Just searched the forum again and SelinaXC apparently fitted a set of the first hand guards I posted without any modifications.

If you're out there...can you offer an input into this? You couldn't have possibly used the fittings that came with the hand guards as they don't even fit into the standard bars.

Grim Reaper 12-01-12 20:10

Also, in this thread there's supposed to be an attachment, but I can't see anything.

Kev said he had added it to the modifications list but the link takes you to the below post???

http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?...dguard+fitting

Any ideas anyone?

Have you thought about swapping the fitting for a shorter expansion bolt or similar? Wurth, for example, do all sorts of weird & wonderful anchor sleeves & the like. I have also seen rubber inserts that may work: http://www.mossexpress.co.uk/threade...FasMtAodFW6Qng

I went & fitted secondhand guards apparently designed for a DT125 - fit perfectly but are only good against wind & very minor brush, as all plastic & no bar-end fitting.....

Grim Reaper 19-01-12 13:08

I've just bought something else which came up. I'll wait an see how these go.

feck 19-01-12 14:04

just ordered another set of these :

http://www.barkbusters.net/products/61.html

they work and the plastics are replaceable...

timboo 19-01-12 18:13

how much were they?

feck 20-01-12 09:41

a nice round fiddy ;)

Grim Reaper 26-01-12 12:33

Woohoo :mbounce:

Finally got a set of Yamaha hand guards from :ebay:

To be honest, I think the others would have fitted if they had the correct sized bolt to use with the original bar end weight.

And as you all said, they have Acerbis stamped on the inside lol

benchxt 26-01-12 21:46

Egos

Hi feck did or do these fit with no worries onto the bike and can you keep the bar end weights on.:signthankspin:

I'm looking for a new set of hand guards and have seen these on ebay so would like to know how you fitted them if there are problems. Pic's would be useful if poss.
