I assumed it didnt like temperatures of minus 16. the next morning in mainz it wouldnt start again so i had to be towed by a GS1200A to the nearest garage where we stripped it diown to find no spark, once we dried and cleaned the coil it fired 1st time, so its off to the yamaha dealer later. other than the non starting it ran perfectly for 1500 miles fully loaded with a fat ******* on board at a steady 80 ish most of the time. TKC's are crap though........

I heard from another Ten owner there that he had ice in the sidestand cut out switch, and that was preventing starting.
What don't you like about the TKCs?

TKC's really dont like the wet, are really really vague and the handling is bloody awfull.

hardly been using the bike due to weather and needing the pick up for work. hit 20,000 miles today (32,000 kms). the little ten is really suffering with corrosion, even though it is cleaned, polished and afc50'd weekly, not to mention being kept in a heated garage. the spokes and banjo bolts are rusty, the engine and fairing bolts are furred and rusty. I can only assume that the germans use something particularly evil on their roads....

stripped the forks and yokes off the bike before going to work this morning in order to regrease the head bearings as they didnt feel right. there was hardly any grease in there from new, also it seemed very dry - I presume the oil in the frame must generate sufficiant heat to dry out the grease. - its like new now.

still on the original front pads, and now back on the pirelli scorpian tyres. no other issues.......

Just seen this one ebay

54k miles on an xt engine should give you good hope that yours will last a good time. Allow the finish as youve mentioned isnt the best

up to 24,800 miles now..... serviced last weekend. oil, filters, plug, new front tyre, complete clean, stripping wheels and front and rear suspension and regreasing along with all calipers being stripped cleaned and regreased along with new front pads got the wheels booked in to be rebuilt under warranty along with the new fuel tank.

Today the ****ing regulator/rectifier burnt itself out leaving me stranded at the side of the road halfway through my I.A.M. test..... not at all impressed. guess this bike will be going at the end of the warranty period.....

GRRRR! this regulator fault is so easily cured and keeps cropping up COME ON YAMAHA! it's a weak link that needs sorting!

i know it's not good enough but if mine gives any grief i probably wont bother with the half assed 'fix' the dealers carry out i will be fitting a more reliable unit with decent terminals. the workings of the reg are fine, just a rubbish marginal connector

me and a few lads[5 xt's a R & 4 Z's] are going off the beaten track in portugal for a few weeks i'm taking a kawazaki reg [i have a few]to bodge in if we have to. though after such a repair a dealer may throw their hand up and walk away. i don't mind thought

all the best i hope your sorted soon

just off the phone to the Yamaha dealer - the whole loom is going to have to be replaced.....

warranty issues so far -
  • replaced cush drive rubbers twice - at 16,000 miles and again at 24,800 miles
  • replaced both panniers due to hinge pins falling out
  • fuel tank being replaced due to laquer peeling
  • spokes being replaced due to corrosion
  • new regulator/rectifier
  • new loom
poor in one year really........

I wonder how many sets of cush drive rubbers Putnik replaced in his 63,000 km of what seems to be fairly hard use with a heavy load...
