Saddle Bags
In case anyone is interested in saddle bags, instead of panniers, I have some Ortlieb bags like these. Have not had chance to test them in the rain, but they are supposed to be 100% waterproof. They have no zips and roll closed at the top for anyone not familiar with Ortlieb stuff. They are fine at 70 mph.
Just thought some of you lot having to commute in the p,,,,ing rain might be interested. ( Iam currently serving licence suspension for speeding and use Ortlieb stuff on my pushbike as well). |

I do have other stuff of Ortlieb which is very impressive quality.
Unfortunaly these saddle bags did not fit on my previous bike without a frame. Otherwise they would melt on the exhaust. With my new Tenere, I will try to fit again at the shop. I do really want these bags because they are absolutely waterproof!!! |

I should think a light frame should be enough to keep them off the exhausts on your bike. The weight is on the saddle straps and a frame maybe just to keep them away from the exhaust.
On mine I just make sure that the bags are quite high up and so are protected by the standard plastic heat shields on the standard exhausts. So when you view from behind the bottoms of the bags stick out a bit more than the top, like the letter A and not flat sided like the letter H if you see what I mean ! |

I reckon they are ideal for that sort of trip. You can get tons of stuff in them. |

I used an Ortlieb roll up bag on my trip to france. First 6-7 hours in the heaviest rain i ever rode in! Not a drop of water in the bag, Class!!! Tankbag with rain cover on pretty moist.
